Madison County leaders aim to get the biggest bang for the buck in road funding.
County commission chairman Anthony Dove said Monday that the state government has not provided much funding for roads through its local assistance program in recent years, providing money for about one to two miles of resurfacing. However, Dove said the state provided funds for about seven miles of resurfacing this past year through its Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant Program (LMIG). And he anticipates roughly the same funding next year.
Dove said he wants to treat the LMIG funds like a matching grant, moving quickly on road resurfacing over the next couple of years.
“Then in two years you’re looking at 28 miles (of resurfacing) instead of 14,” said Dove.
The chairman asked each commissioner to present potential road resurfacing projects in their district.
Commissioners took no official action on road resurfacing Monday, but some of the road names mentioned included: Friendship Church Road, Sanford Nicholson Road, Helican Springs Road, Jay Davis Road, Foote McClellan Road, Black’s Creek Church Road, Adams Duncan Road and New Haven Church Road.
We are living above our means. We are letting tax cheats avoid paying their fair share and yes I mean those Conservation tax parcels that do not qualify. Then the 49& who pay NO federal taxes yet want MC to get grants. The kids I knew in High School who drank and smoked weed and now live double wide with 2 cars and spend whatever they make on well NOT saving for future. The system can no longer support itself even if we tax the 51% of tax payers who pay taxes much much more. I will HARP as EJ notes on the conservation tax issue some more. Ch 231 the Ag business station this weekend mentioned issues with subsidies probably going to be curtailed and some of that related to people taking advantage of the system. Time for our BOC here in this county to look at employee salaries and what some of the higher paid employees do and if not doing that much let them go as I am tired of parasites on my tax dollar.
