Two arrested for burglary, theft by taking
Two men were arrested recently after a deputy spotted them hauling a large residential air conditioning unit in the back of their small car.
Stephen Scott Hamilton, 25, and Travis Blake Hamilton, 24, both of 2554 Hardman Morris Road, Colbert, were charged with one count each of burglary and theft by taking.
According to the incident report, officer Douglas Martin was parked on the side of Crawford W. Long Street in Danielsville last week when the dark-colored Ford Escort went by with a large residential air conditioner in the back.
Martin wrote that due to the number of air conditioner thefts in the area, he decided to pull them over. Before he made the traffic stop, the Hamiltons pulled into a driveway on Crawford W. Long Street, where Martin asked them for their identification and where the air conditioner came from. T. Hamilton said he had answered an ad on CraigsList wanting to give the unit away as scrap and that he had gotten the unit from someone named “Johnny” in the Beaverdam area of Oglethorpe County, but neither man could provide a last name or phone number. Officer Martin noted that the unit appeared fairly new and in good condition and that after researching the ad on CraigsList he could find no ad for hauling off scrap metal for free, as the suspects had stated. Oglethorpe County sheriff’s office said there had been a report of an a/c theft in the Beaverdam area, but they did not have information about what type of unit it was.
During the stop, it was discovered that the vehicle did not have valid insurance, so it was towed. The two men were arrested the next day, according to the report.
In another arrest, Ernest Buchanon, 44, 3257 Washington Road, Apt. 6, Atlanta, was charged with obstruction and two counts of forgery in the first degree after he attempted to flee an officer who got a report of a forgery suspect that had passed a bad check at First Citizen’s in Hull and attempted to pass another at the Danielsville branch.
