Madison County’s 11-12-year-old Little League all stars were knocked out of the state tournament by Columbus 4-2 in Cartersville Thursday.
Madison County led 2-1 at the start of the fourth inning, before a solo homer by Columbus knotted the score at two. Columbus added two more runs in the sixth.
Golston Gillespie struck out five for Madison County. Madison County’s normally sure-handed fielding wasn’t quite as sharp Thursday, as the team committed four errors.
At the plate, C.J. Smith was 3-3 with a double, while Chan Pethel was 2-3 with a double. Columbus surrendered just seven hits to Madison County.
“We had a real chance to see the championship game,” coaches said. “We had the bases loaded with no outs and runners on first and second with no outs and didn’t score. We also just missed a home run.”
The Madison County team concluded all star action this season with a 7-2 record, dropping its final two games to powerhouse squads, Warner Robins and Columbus. The team blazed through the district tournament, defeating four area opponents by a combined score of 51-3.
