Winterville man charged with assault
A Winterville man was arrested recently after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at a mobile home in Tranquility Mobile Home Park on Hwy. 72.
Michael Shane Williams, 49, 1957 Dunlap Ext. was charged with one count each of aggravated assault and battery.
Officer Jason Luke received a call Tuesday, Aug. 16, about 1:20 a.m. from Oglethorpe County officer Henry Hicks who told him he was at the Winterville home of a badly injured woman who had been beaten and cut with a razor. The woman was being transported to Athens Regional Medical Center for her injuries. The victim had identified Williams as her attacker, saying that the attack happened at the mobile home park in Madison County.
Luke interviewed the woman at ARMC where she told him that she and Williams had traveled to the mobile home park from their home in Winterville to visit a friend of his. While they were there, the friend left the residence and Williams began to argue with her. The victim stated that Williams is very controlling of her and became angry because she had smoked eight cigarettes that day, instead of the seven that he “allows” her to smoke. He reportedly told her that smoking cigarettes was not ladylike and began to hit her in the face with his fist. She stated that “he just kept hitting me, he doesn’t know when to stop.” Williams then allegedly cut her on the left wrist with a box knife, leaving three large, deep lacerations. After the attack, Williams then drove them back to their residence in his white Toyota Tacoma, where he dropped her off, telling her that “if you call the law, I will kill you.” She stated that she waited a couple of hours to call for help, because she was afraid he would kill her if he saw deputies at the residence. She stated that she had to call for help because of the large amount of blood loss from her arm wounds.
Officer Luke said the victim stated numerous times during the interview that she was afraid that Williams was going to kill her. The hospital staff was to assist her in getting into a shelter for battered women.
