Madison County school children will not be able to get a free flu vaccine at their school this year. Superintendent Dr. Allen McCannon told the school board Tuesday night that the county health department, who did supply free vaccine to students last year, has had to cancel the program for this year.
“The state immunization program did not receive the expected grant funding and is unable to supply the quantity of vaccine needed to complete this project,” McCannon said, adding that the federal government changed guidelines to provide the vaccine this year.
“The health department does advise vaccinating children for influenza every year and has both the flu shot and limited quantities of the nasal flu vaccine available for $25 per dose (at the health department),” McCannon wrote in a statement to the board, he also added that the health department has limited quantities of free or low cost flu vaccines available for uninsured children.
In other business, assistant superintendent Bonnie Knight told the board that bonds for the school construction projects at the high school and Comer Elementary have been sold and $17 million has been deposited into the school system’s construction account.
The board approved a New York field trip in November for the high school marching band.
The BOE approved a $5,680 proposal with Rindt-McDuff for consulting about the wastewater system and a drainage ditch at the high school. They also approved a letter of intent with Linc Mechanical for a continuation of the Guaranteed Energy Savings program for increased energy efficiency, equipment reliability and improve indoor air quality.
The following personnel recommendations were approved by the board Tuesday: Brandi Paul was approved as a long-term substitute for teacher Kelly Craig at Comer Elementary; Danielsville Elementary School nurse Donna Perry was approved for an unpaid leave; Hull-Sanford Elementary parapro Kalee Thompson’s resignation was accepted; Addie Wood and Amanda Williams were hired as paraprofessionals and an internal transfer from pre-K to K for paraprofessional Brooke Williams was approved.
The board approved the hiring of Dawn Teague as a secretary and Kelly Detter as a paraprofessional at the middle school.
An extension of maternity leave was approved for teacher Christie Haggard at the high school.
Edwin Fowler was hired as a substitute bus driver and bus driver George Patterson was approved for an unpaid leave. The board accepted the resignation of bus driver Jean Brock and special education monitor Jane Dove. Rita Whitehead transferred from bus driver to Dove’s position as monitor.
In school nutrition, Connie Spruill was transferred to a manager in training position while Joanna Willis was transferred to school nutrition manager. Heather Haley and Mary Beth Thomas were hired as school nutrition assistants.
The board also approved Dr. Jim Spellman as a graduation coach to work four 10-hour days per week for the remainder of the school year.
