Madison County’s Jake Westbrook is now a World Series champion.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in game seven of the World Series 6-2 Friday night.

While St. Louis captured the title in the seventh game, the sixth game will go down in history as perhaps the greatest World Series game of all time. And Madison County’s Westbrook was the winning pitcher Thursday, holding the Rangers scoreless in the top of the eleventh, before David Freese ripped the game-winning home run in the bottom of the eleventh.

St. Louis was down to its final strike twice Thursday night and managed to survive.

Westbrook was left off the St. Louis roster in the National League Championship Series, but penciled in for the World Series. Westbrook and his fellow Cardinals joined a jubilant celebration at the pitcher’s mound Friday, following the final out to left field.

Westbrook has a career 85-84 record. None of his wins were as big as his Thursday night victory in a game that will be remembered as long as baseball is played.

Congrats, Jake. No way does the sixth game go down as one of the "greatest" World Series games of the year, much less all time. Five errors committed by Natl. and American league "champs?" Nope...it goes down as one of the most embarrassing games of all time.

Would like to see baseball have a tournament where the winner of the United States Series could play against other countries teams so we really would have a true "World Series." MLB's championship tournament should be referred to as the "U.S. National Series" or "United States Series." It's not a World Series when until the U.S. team plays in a true international tournament against the rest of the world.

I believe there are people that are not from the United States playing on MLB teams here...so it's kinda like a World Series after all...

Not at all. There are a whole bunch of U.S. players playing in other countries. Hopefully they get it right with a name change, or even better actually have a true World Series with Natl. Championship teams from around the world competing for a true WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP! It would be great to see the Cards now have to go and face a tournament with Japan and Cuba in the mix! Any baseball fan who wouldn't want to see that...well...they ain't much of a baseball fan! Maybe one day!

Say WHAT?? He was ptiching against Texas, how did he hold St Louis scoreless?
