A man and woman were arrested recently after they reportedly got into a physical altercation at a camper on Pine Tree Road.
Jose Angel Cordero, 53, 112 Pound Street, Athens, was charged with one count of battery, and Valerie Gayle Van Balen, 53, 699 Pine Tree Road, Danielsville, was charged with one count of simple battery FVA.
Officer Brandon Hanley and two other deputies arrived at the scene to find Van Balen outside the camper with dried blood around her lips and a swollen face. Cordero was inside the camper with bloody scratch marks on his face and claw marks on his back.
Cordero said he came home from work and Van Balen was in a “drunken, ill mood,” and wanted to argue about him not being home on time after work. Cordero said he went to bed to avoid an argument and woke up to Van Balen pouring cold water on him and punching and clawing him. He said he had to defend himself to get her off of him. After interviewing Van Balen, the officers were unable to determine who the primary aggressor was, so both were arrested and taken to jail.
