Colbert man sentenced on traffic charges
A Colbert man was sentenced recently in Madison County Superior Court on numerous traffic-related and other charges.
James Leon Thurmond, 32, 18 Stone Ridge Drive, was sentenced by Judge John Bailey to five years probation each on three counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, reduced to felony obstruction of officers. He was sentenced to 10 years probation for one count of criminal damage to property in the first degree. Additionally, he was sentenced to 12 months probation for each of the following charges: interference with government property (felony), fleeing/attempting to elude an officer (felony), no proof of insurance, improper passing, reckless driving, speeding, driving while license suspended or revoked, obedience to a traffic control device, operating a vehicle without a valid license, obstruction of an officer and removing/affixing a license plate with intent to conceal.
Others sentenced recently in Superior Court included:
•Donald Lynn England, 52, 784 Della Slayton Road, Comer, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $400 fine for one count of disorderly conduct, reduced from a charge of interference with a 9-1-1 call. Charges of cruelty to children in the first degree, simple battery FVA and battery FVA were all dismissed.
•Heriberto Mercado, 20, 9574 Hwy. 72 West, Tranquility Mobile Home Park, Hull, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $350 fine for a charge of obstruction of officers. A charge of giving false name, address, birthdate to law enforcement officers was dismissed.
•Darrell Wallace, 39, 1202 David’s Home Church Road, Comer, was sentenced to 12 months probation, 80 hours of community service and a $350 fine for marijuana possession less than an ounce and 12 months probation and a $750 fine for DUI/drugs. Charges of possession of methamphetamine, driving while license suspended or revoked were dismissed.
•Roger Dale Pressley, Jr., 30, 55 Pace Drive, Nicholson, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $300 fine for one count of disorderly conduct.
•Jerry Douglas Bowen, 64, 7983 Hwy. 29 North, Danielsville, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $350 fine for one count of reckless conduct. Charges of pointing or aiming gun or pistol at another, discharging a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and discharge of a gun/pistol near a public highway or street were all dismissed.
•Talon Aaron, 32, 190 Beaverdam Creek Road, Winterville, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $200 fine for a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
•Scott Deon Hillsman, 21, 1267 Hull Road, Athens, was sentenced to two years confinement, eight years of probation and a $600 fine for one count of burglary.
•Krista Lea Watson, 30, 615 Sanford Road, Hull, was sentenced to ten years of probation and a total of $1,350 in fines for five counts of forgery in the first degree.
•Marlon Sherrard Haynes, 35, 6005 Smokey Road, Athens, was sentenced to seven years of probation and a $600 fine for aggravated assault under the family violence act. Additional charges of burglary, battery FVA, theft by taking and failure to appear were dismissed.
•Jesse Dean Davis, 31, 363 Helican Springs Road, Athens, was sentenced to five years probation and $600 in fines for two charges of forgery in the first degree.
•Clayton Paytron Cooper, 26, 127 Madison Boulevard, Colbert, was sentenced to seven years probation and a $600 fine for one count of felony theft by taking.
•Teresa Lynn Tucker, 45, 154 East Crogan Street, Lawrenceville, was sentenced to 12 months probation and $500 in fines for two counts of battery under the family violence act.
•Gregory Thomas Morgan, 51, 1805 Comer Road, Comer, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $350 fine for one count of simple battery FVA. He was also sentenced to 12 months probation and a $300 fine for one count of public drunkenness.
•Antonious Lanier Foote, 29, 60 Parkview Homes, Athens, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $300 fine for one count of obstruction of officers and 12 months probation and a $200 fine for fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. Charges of failure to maintain lane and failure to stop at a stop sign were dismissed.
•Darren Eugene Chandler, 45, 4250 Pleasant Lake Lane, Duluth, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $300 fine for one count of possession of marijuana less than an ounce. Charges of operating a vehicle without a valid tag and failure to maintain lane were dismissed.
•Moises Mercado, 28, 9574 Hwy. 72 West, Lot 24, Hull, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $350 fine for one count of obstruction of officers. A charge of hindering the apprehension or punishment of a criminal was dismissed.
•Charles William Griggs, 24, 29 Doris Lane, Hull, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $350 fine for one count of battery and a $100 fine and 12 months probation for one count of public drunkenness.
•Fernando Joaquinn Patterson, 31, 5494 Jot-Em-Down Road, Danielsville, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $350 fine for one count of obstruction of officers. Charges of disorderly conduct and failure to appear were dismissed.
•Malagro Sanchitt Bradford, 18, 1151 Thomas Heights, Hull, was sentenced to 12 months probation and a $100 fine for one count of possession of drug-related objects/equipment. He was also given ten hours of community service.
•Joshua Ryan Sheppard, 20, 5657 Hwy. 29 South, Hull, was sentenced to two years confinement and eight years probation for each of five counts of theft by receiving stolen property. A previous charge of burglary was dismissed. He also was instructed to pay $1,500 in fines ($300 each count).

These judges are making off like bandits with our money, but aren't doing their jobs! Can we give some of these judges some probation time off the job and get some replacements who understand JAIL TIME for THEFT, BURGLARY and ASSAULT?
