...but neighboring Commerce not so lucky

North Georgia was in the path of some violent storms Tuesday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay moved through the Southeast. Madison County received a much-needed downpour, but avoided the worst of the weather.

“There’s wasn’t much at all, no storm damage,” said Madison County 911 director David Camp. “We dodged a bullet.”

Camp said several fire departments patrolled the roads looking for downed trees, but they didn’t find anything.

Neighboring Commerce wasn’t so lucky.

The storm destroyed one mobile home and damaged several residences at about 4:30 Tuesday afternoon in the Cedar Drive area of Commerce.

No one was hurt by the twister, which approached from the southwest over Washington Street, then dipped to the ground for mere seconds before receding back into the clouds.
