A referendum on Sunday alcohol sales in Comer was defeated by voters Tuesday night. The measure failed in a vote of 101 opposed and 89 in favor.
And Comer has a new face for mayor.
Newcomer Jody Blackmon handily defeated opponent Billy Burroughs, a former Comer mayor, 162 votes to 25 votes. Current mayor David McMickle did not seek re-election.
In another Comer race, Estelle Gilstrap defeated long-time councilman Howard Threlkeld, 36 to 18, for the district 3 council seat.
Brian Fortson defeated Claudia Gantt 36 – 23 for Comer’s district 2 seat, currently held by Kevin Booth, who decided not to seek re-election.
In Danielsville, incumbent councilman Ron Faust was defeated by challenger Tim Stamps, who won the seat 58 – 13.
Councilman Jamie Spurlin narrowly hung on to his seat, 34 – 31, against challenger Toby Payne.
Mayor Philip Croya, who had no competition, received 35 votes.
In Carlton, long-time Mayor Rufus Kidd defeated challenger Mike Jones, 46 – 31.
The following five candidates will have a seat at the council table Jan. 1: incumbent David Seawright, 68 votes; incumbent Claudia Thornton, 64 votes; incumbent Terry Kidd, 61; newcomer Brad Bird, 60 votes and Ronald Turner, 55 votes. Joey Cash received 47 votes.
God bless Madison County (and no place else).
Evidently, most people are quite capable of consuming alcohol responsibly, benefiting their hearts with their one or two glasses of red wine a day. However, I would prefer all addictive substances to disappear from the face of the earth forever; it ain't gonna happen, ever!
We were already here.
I guess most of the farmers you know have owned their land hundreds of years. I don't know any like that.
Newt Gingrich was recently asked which former president he would add to Mount Rushmore if he could. He said Reagen and FDR. Imagine that.
Your personal issues are amusing.
You people don't have enough brains to fill a thimble, so it's easy to see why you lost your land.
If it wasn't for FDR, your folks would have probably starved to death.
I don't feel sorry for any of you whinners. Cry on.
It all makes me want to suggest that, if there is something about your life that you don't like, start from where you are at this moment to change it, not from where you were or from where you came from. This my-father-was-better-than-your-father business is not only silly and embarassingly childish, but is completely pointless. Now is where you are; tomorrow is where you should be headed, otherwise you continue to go nowhere and nowhere seems to be why you are whining and resentful. Be smart; find another way, a better way for yourselves. I sincerely hope you find it.
It took me a while and some mental processing and reprocessing to figure out this sentence. I guess it says that, like most leaders, they did some things that were good and some things that were bad.
How anyone, especially an American, can refer to Eleanor Roosevelt as "that wife of his" is astonishing! Read a biography of this great woman; she is fascinating, highly intelligent, strong, courageous and deeply caring of others.
And yes, our President Obama has carefully studied FDR and all of history as it relates to our current economic problems since there are striking similarities. To not do so would be irrisponsible. Our Great Recession has eluded the best of thinkers all over the world. Just because President Obama has not been able to solve this incredibly complex, world wide problem does not mean he has failed. No one on the planet has the answer, absolutely no one; why blame it on President Obama?
SEE YA as we CRUISE THROUGH on our way to better places!
Saw this on a bumpersticker today, "Thank The Good Lord I'm Not In Comer, GA"
lol...Thanks for making my point.
Speaking of children, I am forever grateful to my parents for two things that gave me a huge advantage in life. They did not smoke at a time when it was considered the absolute "in" thing and they spoke English well. You grow up internalizing your parents' ways; it's the law of nature. To better themselves, my father (air line pilot), my former husband (management consultant) and his brother (successful business man) all worked conscienciously to drop their "hick" accents. They would never have been hired in those fields and found significant success if they had not, first, unlearned how they grew up and, second, relearned the English language which they all did in college. Like quiting smoking, it is very hard to do. All three never smoked, either, though their parents did. This was also key to their successes.
If I, a reasonably intelligent person, cannot understand you, Resident Redneck, then you have failed to communicate; you have failed to make yourself understood. That I have to ask for more words from you demonstrates that. Besides, repeating is inefficient, irritating for you and a waste of time and effort for both of us.
This is why we have all the rules and requirements for our language, better and clearer communication without misunderstandings. Perhaps, if you simply slow down, you can give your posts more power and influence.
YOU E.J. are the main thing wrong with this country. You attack what you don't understand.
I'm tired. Can someone please translate this for me?
All I can hope for is that the Madison County school system is currently doing a better job in language arts for Mr. Redneck's children and grandchildren. (I can't figure out why he told us about them if he thought they were nobody's business; at least that's the best I could figure from his posts).
I had also hoped this forum would draw more people with clear and reasonable opinions so that useful, enlightening exhanges could take place. Weekly opinion letters in the "paper" paper are too slow for discussion. While anonymity allows more open discussion, it also allows mindless, angry, rude, crude and uncivil remarks. While unpleasant to read, they come with the territory and can simply be ignored.
Do ANY of you know what the term "BEATING A DEAD HORSE" means? Some of you will still be talking about this UNTIL it is legal to buy "POT" in Comer and 10 year olds can buy Beer.
