The Madison County High School Marching Band and Color Guard captured the 2011 U.S. Scholastic Band Association’s National Championship Saturday.
The band was welcomed home Sunday at 1 p.m. by a large crowd of friends and family members, who held up congratulatory banners and hollered for the championship outfit as the band’s two buses rolled into the parking lot in front of the old gym at the high school.
The national champions posed for photos in front of the large, excited crowd, holding up a championship banner and hoisting a five-foot national championship trophy.
The celebration marked the end of a memorable week for 99 MCHS band and color guard members. The crew traveled to Washington D.C. this week and visited Arlington National Cemetery. Band director Nick Golding said the visit was sobering for the band members and put the trip into perspective, seeing the vast expanse of grave markers for those sacrificed in defense of the U.S.
The band, which has performed a patriotic halftime show in honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, then marked Friday in the annual New York City Veterans Day Parade. The group then visited Ground Zero, the site of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Finally, the group traveled to Allentown, Pa., to perform in a national competition against 15 bands from around the U.S. The Red Raider band waited in the cold as the top 10 winners were announced, finally erupting in elation as Madison County was declared this year’s national champions.

Thanks to The Madison County Journal -Zach Mitcham- for being at the school to cover the return of the MCHS students. I appreciate seeing the band/color guard getting the much deserved recognition. They practice many, many hours each week...throughout the year. Their perseverance has paid off~Congratulations to Nick Golding, the MCHS students, and the Red Raider parents for their dedication. It is great to see the support of friends and family upon their return.
