Two charged with burglarizing chicken farm, shop
Two Athens men were arrested recently after they burglarized a chicken farm and a shop.
They reportedly stole a chainsaw from a chicken farm on Wildcat Bridge Road and two days later stole items totaling $2,350 from a shop on Shirley Road.
Jeffrey Gonzolas Kelley, 44, 272 North Bluff Road, and Lenior Renwick, 50, 330 Cole Ridge Court, Apt.1, were each charged with two counts of burglary.
According to the incident report, on Jan. 4, officer Jeffrey Vaughn was dispatched to the farm where the owner told him that a suspicious black male came into his chicken house while he was working and began asking a bunch of questions about chicken farms, all while reaching for his cellphone and holding it. While he was talking, the victim heard a door shut on a vehicle. When he looked outside, he saw another black male wearing a black shirt getting into a red Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle’s registration returned to a woman with an Athens address. After the men left, the victim discovered his chainsaw missing.
In a similar incident that same day, a man who owns a chicken farm on David’s Home Church Road reported that a red Chevy Tahoe had pulled into the driveway of his chicken houses. The Tahoe pulled out of the driveway and he followed it to another driveway where he obtained the tag number, which came back to the same woman in Clarke County.
Two days later, after officer Jeffrey Strickland was sent to the Shirley Road incident scene, investigator Steve Kimbel called him to say that the two men had been arrested for the Wildcat Bridge Road burglary and that several items in the vehicle matched the items missing from the shop burglary.
