Madison County commissioners unanimously agreed to adopt the county school board’s district lines Friday afternoon.
The county BOC and the school board have had a different district map for years, which causes confusion for voters and county leaders, officials say. Now those maps will be consolidated, with the county agreeing to adopt the school board’s map lines.
District maps must be redrawn every 10 years following the Census. And BOC members agreed this past summer to stick with their own map with as little changes as possible.
But board members later clashed on exactly where those lines were drawn and what had actually been approved. Commissioner John Pethel said the board approved a change along the border of districts 2 and 4. But other board members said no such move had been approved.
This week, state legislators urged the BOC to consider adopting the school board’s district map to eliminate confusion for county citizens.
The board voted 5-0 Friday to adopt the school system’s map.
One additional amendment will also be required. The BOC initiated staggered terms in 2010. And Pethel ran that year after only a two-year term.
The BOC agreed Friday that Pethel’s district should not be up for election again in 2012, since his term is scheduled to expire in 2014. The board agreed to ask legislators to make sure the district numbers are appropriately placed to ensure that Pethel's term is for four years. Districts 1 and 4, as well as the county chairmans' seat, are up for election this year.
This will also require that either the school board or the BOC flip flop its numbering in Districts 2 and 4 to match the other board’s labels. Right now, District 4 covers the Danielsville area for the BOC, while District 2 represents that area for the school board.

Are you aware of how financially stressed all newspapers are these days? They are barely surviving with staff cut to the bone more so than many businesses now. With all they have to do, this commenting site should be the last of their priorities.
It's not like posters such as yourself contribute anything of substance here. Just immature whining, complaining and making completely unfounded accusations. I sincerely hope commenters here are not representative of the people of Madison County. Otherwise, we are drowning in a sea of resentful bitterness and infantile expectations.
I often wonder why there isn't an complete online version of the MCJ available for purchase. I rarely buy newspapers anymore, but would sign up right away for an online subscription.
Older folks still want that paper in their hands, but how many more years will that be the case?
I own a business, and have spent a lot of money advertising in newspapers in the past. Same as the yellow pages, but,I wouldn't spend a penny in either one at this point. Online advertising or nothing.
Make this online news source appealing to advertisers, and they will come. Frequent news updates (not of bloggers) would be a step in the right direction. Give us a reason to drop by more often.
Its always easier to sit here and be angry and blame this and blame that . What are we really so angry about ?
I think maybe some of us just might be mad at ourselves for not doing what we know is and will always be the right thing to do.
Its ok. Get back up dust ourselves off and move forward and try doing the right thing from this day forward . Its not to late ,but be weary of the things that turn us against each other leading us down this road in which we all seem to be cannibalizing each other . Its simple yall ,it really is . We The People , Nothing more .
Maybe we all need to reexamine who we are and what we really stand for and reach a higher point of enlightenment . Because what we are doing today sure isn't. working .
Will any of you join me in this endeavor ? Probably not but that's ok I wont give up on us as it seems so many have . This isn't the end yall this is just the beginning.
We had to come to this point it was inevitable. That's the human condition .If you think I'm wrong tell me I'm wrong and show me a better way . I would listen and if it is a better way for us all I will do it.
Will you do the same for me and others ?
Listen to Ron Paul,he has a better way, friend.
