If you want to place a political sign on your property, the county’s not going to stand in your way, no matter how big you want to make it. But don’t put signs — political or otherwise — on county property.

That was the word from the county commission table Feb. 6.

“I don’t think you can regulate free speech,” said BOC chairman Anthony Dove.

While people have the right to express themselves on their own property as they see fit, county guidelines clearly state that “no person may post or display any sign on county property.” But the guidelines don’t ban individuals from wearing clothing or driving vehicles with messages.

“The prohibition on ‘posting or displaying’ a sign shall not be construed so broadly as to prohibit persons from being present on public property, while conducting public business or participating in public activities, while wearing clothing or driving a vehicle with a message painted for affixed thereto.”

OTHER BUSINESS

In other matters Feb. 6, the board agreed to update the county codebook. Magistrate Judge Harry Rice asked the board to approve the update, noting that changes previously approved by the board, which will help expedite court proceedings, were not properly codified. The changes, once officially codified, will allow the Magistrate and Probate courts to hear certain cases that had been relegated to Superior Court. Rice said this will help relieve some of the Superior Court’s case backlog.

The group approved three routine zoning requests for agricultural use of properties on Dove Drake Road, Hardman Morris Road and Minish Road. The BOC approved John Sherwood Ogle as a new 9-1-1 dispatcher. The audience heard from BOC chairman Anthony Dove who said that the board has not done anything to stop or delay the expansion of Ingles in Hull or the placement of a Dairy Queen in Danielsville. Dove said the board has received a $1,100 grant from the Rotary Club to run extra electrical outlets into Madison County Memorial Park and the board agreed to have the county building and grounds supervisor get quotes on the cost of running water into the park.

The county library board has received a $25,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the board asked to meet with the BOC to discuss use of the funds. A meeting is planned for Feb. 16 at 9 a.m. in the commissioners’ meeting room.

The board discussed but took no action on an intergovernmental agreement with the city of Carlton for code enforcement services in the city. The group heard from a Sailors Road resident who said that people are using the dirt road as a cut through and he wanted the speed limit reduced from 35 to 25 mph. The board informed him that they could reduce the speed limit to 30 mph. BOC members also said the road department would look into putting a stop sign at an intersection on the road.

Since when does the government own anything?
It belongs to us the citizens and anybody being paid by us the citizens we own also or do we ?
I see to many signs that arent one the right of way that should be, protesting against a governmnet that no longer represents us as we the people any more . Thats the signs I see. How abot you?

Rubs me the wrong way as well.
It's their property (right-of-way)but I get to pay for it and pay taxes on it.

Don't worry, there won't be any political signs on any of my property. Ever.

Hey Ben How are you doing?
Couldn't agree with you more and it should rub you the wrong way as well as the rest of us in this county. If the just powers come from the consent of the governed then why weren't mine or yours or any of the rest of us for that matter, asked for our consent?
I just think its totally wrong and just more of the good ole boys politics at work.
I think its just political because they want people to have to show who they vote for or support and what better way to make them do that then by not allowing political signs any where but on private property .
That kind of removes the whole point of having a secret ballot doesn't it?
I don't have a problem with who ever wants to run for what ever office, putting their signs all over the right of way as long as they don't present a traffic hazard and they get them up after the election and maybe we could even offer to help those candidates we wish to support to get them up . I say the heck with that BOC Let candidates put them where they want to .

Ron Paul 2010 / Kip Thomas for 2012 Because were sure don't want Clayton Lowe or Obama or any of the other three GOP candidates do we ?
Kind of Like Roy Barnes . He had his chance now move on . Kip in my opinion has made his mistakes but over all has done an awesome job for the county and the tax payers because he has run a surplus rather than a deficit. That says allot to me . Semper Fi Brother .
We should blog and E-mail go talk or call by phone all our friends and Family share with one another who we think should win dont let them tell us who we want because you see how thats worked out for us . Let us all join together and as( We The People) make the changes we want.
When the Government is scared and nervous we have liberty when the people are scared and nervous we have tyranny . Quit being affraid or shamed in to thinking we cant do this people. As Winston Churchill said there is nothing to fear but fear itself . The Church is trying to win support for Santorum but they just want something for themselves they dont know God they are hypocrites most of them anyway and I dont mean all who attend maybe just the one at the pulpit telling people who they should vote for . I say that because you have good and bad in all thigs just as you have it in all people . Its the human condition .So in close I say let all us good people stand up together and take back whats our God given rights and quit buying into all the lies and propaganda. We can do it I know we can just have faith and we will move mountains .

Signs signs evrywhere a sign blocking up the scenery breaking my mind ,do this dont do that cant you read the signs . Who wants to fight for our freedom now ? Why we are haveing our sons and daughters killed on foreign soil for another political agenda and while we are losing more and more freedom everyday.
Nobody cares espically the politicans who send them to fight for what they say is freedom and security. What a bunch of propganda.

There's an election March 6th. Remember the primary elections? Also, the presidential election is only 8 months away. Obama campaigned for nearly two years last time. It's time!
