A Winterville woman faces assault charges after speeding away during a traffic stop and injuring two Comer policemen recently

Comer police chief Brent Zellner and officer Dennis Bell were injured Feb. 7 by a fleeing suspect on Hwy. 22. Zellner said he has a deep tissue bruise in his left shoulder from the incident. But Bell suffered the more serious injuries in the incident and was transported by ambulance to Athens Regional for treatment of a fractured kneecap, along with wrist and neck sprains.

Jessica Marie Todd, 25, 196 Dudley Farm Road, Winterville, was charged with failure to comply with head/tail light requirements, of marijuana less than one ounce, possession of methamphetamine, fleeing or attempting to elude and two counts of aggravated assault.

A passenger in the 1999 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Todd was also arrested. Gwendolyn Lorraine Hill, 37, 1502 Elberton Hwy., Lexington, was charged with probation violation, possession of marijuana less than an ounce and open container.
According to Zellner, the Comer Police Department received a call to be on the lookout for a vehicle with a blown headlight and broken taillight. When the policemen stopped the vehicle, they noticed the smell of marijuana. Zellner then discovered that Todd had a warrant issued for her in Oglethorpe County. Zellner, who stood on the driver’s side of the car, informed Todd that she was under arrest. Bell stood on the passenger’s side.

“She said, ‘I don’t have a warrant and those aren’t my @#$$%^ drugs! @#$% y’all!’” Zellner said.

She then put the vehicle in drive.

“I grabbed on to her and officer Bell jumped halfway in, halfway out,” said Zellner. “So she was dragging us both down the road. We were struggling with her. Dennis was finally able to get his hands on the gear shift and put the vehicle in park.”

Zellner said he could hear the tires spinning in the mud and on the pavement. Then, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop.

“It stopped violently, threw me up into the door, bounced him off the inside of the car,” said Zellner. “It hurt him and hurt my shoulder. But we were able to get her cuffs on. And she continued to fight with us. We secured the dope, then got her to the jail and found methamphetamine on her.”

Zellner said that if Bell hadn’t gotten the car in park, the two of them could have been hurt much more seriously.

“I’m just glad we didn’t get killed; God was watching us,” said Zellner. “We did catch the bad guy and got the dope.”

Comer Mayor Jody Blackmon said the officers were injured, but made the arrests.

“We regret that officers were injured, but they did so in the line of duty and they got the bad guy off the streets,” he said.

D%&&%%$!! You want to get hurt or killed over some white trash? You knew who she was, get her later or chase her down with your car, but jumping into a fleeing suspect's car and hanging out the window is a great way to get killed.

Anonymous- Anyone even officers can sit here and say they wouldn't jump halfway into a car but I'm sure it was one of those in the heat of the moment things? And officer Bell may even say now what he did was dumb but he had a split second to react and that's what he did. But at least God was there with them and the woman didn't get away.

Went from a simple drug bust with a fine and probation to a serious assault on 2 police officers for which she will likely do 10-20 years in prison.

Adios, lady! You're now going to the pokey for a long, long time!

I hope the officers recover soon. Agree with Ms. Moss, they don't get paid enough. Drugs have made every officers job higher risk each day than it ever was and that is saying a lot.I has never been a safe and easy job and most folks don't respect them enough for what they do.

Maybe what they do doesn't deserve any respect because what they do is based on false teachings and not truth , it is not justice but it is demonic .

I have recently had brought to my attention an incident by the same fraternal order of law enforcement officers at our high school, where and under age minor was mistreated, their property damaged by the same thuggish law enforcement officers , who I was told used vulgar language and were very aggressive in their actions against her . To top it off they found nothing that they said they were looking for .

Not only was her 4th Amendment rights violated, a law that was designed to protect us all from unlawful search and seizure regardless of age , but her being under age violated the laws that protect our youth from being treated in this manner with out having a parent or guardian or legal advisor present. I for one will never except this as justice and will do all in my power to start bringing this type of behavior to justice and make them pay .

So why should we honor those who violate the supreme law . They abuse our youth at these schools treat them as if they were in prison . They deliver false teachings to corrupt their minds. Why is that and why does that un Godly action deserve anything but to be treated with utmost disrespect . Tell me anyone of you who have had these false teachings

why do you believe that this should be acceptable action . I tell you have sold your souls to the devil himself . To the least one of mine that you have done this to so shall it be done to you . Oh you who have ears but do not hear ,and you who have eyes but can not see.

JC- Wait a minute you are trying to put ALL law enforcement officers into one group as they are all bad. There are bad cops and there are good cops who do their jobs within the law. But they are humans too are they not allowed to have a bad day, family problems, problems that have nothing to do with their jobs? BUT respect will get you farther than disrespect.
You act like this must have been your child who you say was mistreated? But let me ask you were you there and seen this first hand? No because you said the incident was brought to your attention. So you don't know what vulgar language this minor used towards the officers? I know most officers treat you the way you treat them? If you treat them with disrespect then you get disrespected and I can tell you kids today don't have respect for nothing Not their parents, teachers, friends, so why would you think they would respect law enforcement? You may think your kids respect you but is it really respect or do they fear you?

So you are one of those many parents who have taught your kids to disrespect law enforcement! Gee, thanks; makes our society function sooo much better. As if their job is not hard enough, they have to fight against this twisted anti-social menace as well.

Ms.K- You are right. Most of us out here get it but I think JC and their disrespected baby has smoked to much wacky weed. With all the school shootings that have happen when the law gets word that someone has a gun at school people like JC think the law should buy the kid involved a Coke and a candy bar and ask them real nice and sweet to give them the gun. Sorry JC this is the real world here and if you don't like it by all means leave it? I don't think there are any mean vulgar talking cops on the Moon or the planet Pluto.

This was and unfortunate incident .
Where was the common sense here though .
Was it worth it ?

Couldn't Zellner and Bell just used the tag to track this women down rather than playing super hero for what amounts to a small possession charge and fleeing which caused them to be injured .

I know I will sleep better knowing that public enemy number one is off the streets .

However I don't think trying to wrestle with a 1 1/2 or 2 ton piece of machinery was very wise . Maybe just a little to gung ho and now its going cost us all once again. We will pay to house this person in jail , court cost and medical treatment for both of the injured officers .

Maybe its just me but I just some how don't see the end result being worth the cost

However I'm sure there are some who will be more than willing to show me the error in my thinking . With snide inmature comments .

There seems to be a few on here that really don't have anything to offer other than that .

I kind of agree with JC also . How do two wrongs make a right if what he is saying actually happened and I have heard something about this too.

I guess in the minds of some its ok to break the law to enforce the law . If it were my child I would sue all parties in order to preserve not only their rights but all our rights.

Isn't he always talking about supporting the Constitution ? Why would you be such a hypocrite towards JC for stating the facts and supporting that same Constitutional 4TH Amendment ?

You also claim to be or seem to be anti God and Atheist then how can you say you support the Constitution which is written in line with our Declaration of Independence ? Which states ,

Well maybe I am mistaken once again , but maybe you guys are testament to the failure of a Government run school system .

Thomas Jefferson warned us long ago to never let the government take over our educational or school system and looked what has happened.

One last thing I get so sick and tired of hearing the older generation running down the younger with false actuations about how they are dragging down the socialist society with drugs . Maybe those people should do a little more studying of the history of America . Drug and Alcohol abuse were ramped in the twenties and thirties . It didn't just start here with the youth and you all want to act so innocent . Well nobody is that innocent or without sin . He who is cast the first stone .

Hold on, John. I do agree with JC on the 4th amendment issue concerning the child at school, but, this person's comments are laced with lunacy that I don't agree with. Especially after reading their comment in another story about the abused child.

I make no quams about it I love my creator and I will never be shamed into not loving him and honoring him in whatever way I am called to do so

Oh how sad I feel for you who will never know ture love and happiness and peace as I do . I will pray for you . Wow. Just, wow! This one is not only totally steeped, but pickled as well. No point in addressing this deeply righteous man who believes all he has to do is love God and God will take care of all his needs. He will never understand that there are lots of folks out there in the world who have no use for god or religion of any kind and they do quite well in life; I would even say they do better than most and not just in wealth, but health and happiness too. They go about their business without fear of any kind other than not making enough effort to take care of their own needs because they know no one else will. Do all the fearing you want. I have no use for it. I'm here now, for whatever reason; it does not matter to me. That's a question that simply does not occur to me and never will. When I go, I'm gone. Done. It's all over. Can't do a thing about it and wouldn't try. Just the way it is and I can totally accept that. I've got one time to go around and that's all there is. I'm not going to make up something so I can pretend that the end is not the end so I can feel better. I accept reality and make the most of my life's experience. What for? Is the school not government property, the lockers, and all items placed there within? If so, there is no violation to the search and seizure right. The same as crossing a guard line with a controlled substance, metal detectors in courthouses and the airport. If you choose to bring a a banned item in this area you are forgoing your 4th amendment. don't want the time? Don't do the crime.

This is to the ones that think that the officers mistreated the poor student at the high school. I have 110% respect for the officers in this county. They are under paid to say the least and from day to day they don't know who they are going to have to deal with and if it will be their last day, just so we can all be alot safer living our lives. Maybe that parent should cut Jerry Springer off and teach their children to respect the Law Officers in this county and others, or we will get to see them on Americas Most Wanted. We had a terrible accident happen to our family this past summer, and the Sheriffs Dept
has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help out and check on our well being. hopefully that teen will learn not to put herself in that situation again, lay down with dogs and your gonna get fleas. THANK YOU to ALL the MADISON COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICERS!!

kaykay- AMEN you tell em girl. These people are saying Oh my poor baby was mistreated by the police? Was not what the teen was doing against the law? What's the difference in a teen bringing pot to school than bringing a gun? They are both against the law. I can tell you from experence if you show the cops respect they will show you respect.
Just like ANYONE posting here if someone starts disrespecting you your not just going to stand there and talk all nice and sweet to them.
A rule that I grew up by and still believe to this day is "RESPECT IS NOT GIVEN IT IS EARNED"

I'm glad your experience with the police was a positive one, but, your Constitutional rights probably weren't violated in the process, were they?
This has nothing to do with watching Jerry Springer,by the way.
Protecting our Constitutional Rights is far more important than whatever this student was accused of, and, found to be innocent of, according to the writer.
All is not as it seems.
