Woman with lots of cash charged with shoplifting
An Athens woman with a large amount of cash in her purse was charged with shoplifting after a customer reportedly spotted her stuffing items into her shirt at the Dollar General store on Glenn Carrie Road recently.
Catherine Dianne Ford, 40, 485 Stapler Road, Athens, was arrested by officer Jason Luke on one count of shoplifting.
According to the incident report, Luke arrived on scene to find that store workers had Ford detained in the parking lot. The night shift manager said she was alerted by a customer that Ford was “putting items in her shirt.” She said employees did not approach Ford, but gave her an opportunity to pay. She did purchase several items and left the store. The manager said she approached her about the items she did not pay for and Ford returned three picture books, a five pack of pencils, body spray, and a Glad oil refill. When officer Luke asked her if she had any more items, she handed him another Glade oil refill, an eight-pack of gloves, hydrating lotion and two cigarette lighters. She was then placed under arrest for shoplifting. Once at the jail, she was found to have $2,634 in cash in her purse.
Other incidents on file at the sheriff’s office included:
•Theft by taking was reported on Fox Trail after a sub contractor on a foreclosed home reported that the a/c unit was destroyed and all the copper wiring underneath it had been removed. The contractor said workers on the home informed him of two black males who reside at the residence across from the home and appeared to be watching closely when the workers prepared to leave each afternoon. They said the men should at least know about the theft.
•A woman on Miller McElreath Road reported that someone attempted to cut the wire on her home’s a/c unit in the rear of the residence. She said her mother came to the residence and noticed that the whole unit had been taken apart and that the only thing left were the sides. Copper wiring had also been cut coming from the propane tank in back of the house.
•A middle school student was charged with disrupting public school after she would not follow directions and became verbally disruptive towards the school administrator.
•A bus window was knocked out of a school bus while it was parked at the far end of the high school. A video was to be reviewed.
•Two drink machines were reportedly broken into at the main building of the recreation department and approximately $200 was taken in coins and bills. The incident was believed to have occurred overnight.
•A woman on Hwy. 98 East said her son became irate when she came home and told him he had a therapist appointment in Atlanta. She said he started “acting crazy” grabbed her car keys off the counter and left in her vehicle. She said she did not want to press charges at this time because she feels he needs professional help. Officer Alan Stratton informed her he could complete an overdue motorist report so law enforcement could be on the look out for the vehicle.
•A woman on Grady Drive reported that her vehicle had been scratched with a sharp object on the left quarter panel and that the left rear tire had been flattened.
•A man on Nowhere Road said someone used his Social Security number to file a fraudulent tax return.
•A hot water heater and kitchen light fixtures were reportedly removed from a vacant home in foreclosure

•A man reported that his 1960 Ford F100 pick up was stolen from a home on Piedmont Road. He said the truck had no tires on it.
•A possible case of child abuse was reported on Hwy. 72 West. No other information was available.
•A man on Hardman Morris Road reported that someone reportedly stole his hydrocodone medication from his mailbox. He said the medication was sent through the mail from the Veterans Administration and that he had had the post office trace it. He said the post office had delivery confirmation from six days ago but that he had never received it.
•Two high school students were arrested for possession of marijuana less than an ounce after the Madison County drug K9 alerted on their vehicles in the student parking lot. Marijuana was found in both vehicles.
•The manager of Ingles reported that a white male wearing a gray hoodie and blue jeans left the store without paying for two 36-packs of beer. He said the subject left the parking lot at a high rate of speed in a dark colored SUV.
•A man on Moonlight Drive reported that he and his wife’s vehicle was stolen by their son. He said his son asked to borrow the vehicle the day before and was to have it back by 11 p.m. but did not return it. He said he wished to prosecute due to his son’s actions and the many multiple actions that have occurred recently with him.
He said his son has a major drug problem and believes their vehicle was traded for drugs.
•A man on Sunray Hatchery Road reported that someone stole several different types of metal from an old storage building and from around the barns at his mother’s vacant home place. He said the items included old window weights, a buggy axle and a cow yoke along with other types of scrap metal.
•A black Sentry safe was found lying in a ditch next to Zeb’s Barbecue. The safe was open and wet on the inside. Some items were still in the safe.
•A deputy was forced to discharge his duty weapon twice to put a deer down after it was hit by a truck on Hwy. 29 North. The driver said he did not need an accident report since his vehicle was not damaged but that the deer needed to be put down due to its injuries.
9-1-1 receives calls
The Madison County 9-1-1 office received several hundred calls between Feb. 13 and Feb. 20.
These calls included the following incidents:
•A suicide attempt was reported at the county jail Feb. 16 at 9:52 p.m. when an inmate was reported with wrist lacerations. The “patient told the jailer that he also swallowed the razor blade.”
•A woman complained of shoulder and arm pain after a Ford Focus wrecked on Hwy. 72 in Comer shortly after 8 a.m. Feb. 17.
•A person on a bicycle was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee around 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Food Mart on Hwy. 98. The report noted the “male subject is up walking around, walking away from the scene, refusing treatment.”
•An injury was reported in an accident on Hwy. 98 Feb. 18 shortly after noon between a Nissan Maxima and a 2003 Ford truck.
•A dump truck and a Kia collided on Pine Valley Road at 7:55 a.m. Valentine’s Day.
•A man reported shoulder pain after an accident involving a 2006 Toyota Tundra and a 2005 Hyundai Accent shortly after 10 p.m. Feb. 19 on Hwy. 29 in Hull.
