Two arrested during safety check

Catherine Loretta King, 44, 110-B Wilson Road, Apt. G-42, Commerce, was charged with giving a false name, address or birthdate to law enforcement officials, open container, allowing an unlicensed person to drive and a hold for Jackson County.

The driver, Ashley Melinda King, 23, 110 B Wilson Road, Commerce, was charged with driving without a valid license.

According to the incident report, the pair, along with an infant in an infant seat, pulled up to the checkpoint in a 2000 Ford Ranger. The younger Ms. King, who was driving, told officer Justin Hanley that she did not have a valid license and she was arrested. Officer Joshua Smith smelled alcohol on the elder Ms. King’s breath and when asked, she produced an open beer container from the between the seats. She gave Smith several false names and dates of birth, before a family member gave them the correct name. She was found to have numerous suspensions on her license and an active warrant out of Jackson County for a probation violation related to traffic offenses.

Both were taken to jail and the infant was turned over to a family member.

•Darryl Henry Howard, 23, 3050 Danielsville Road, Athens, theft by receiving stolen property.
