Madison County commissioners learned Monday that Oglethorpe County leaders have agreed to chip in $5,000 for expenses this year on Watson Mill State Park.
The park includes land in both counties.
Madison County commissioners recently agreed by a 3-2 vote to allocate $26,000 toward the park’s maintenance. The state government decided last year to eliminate staff at the park and to reduce the park’s status to an “outdoor recreation area.” The board has negotiated for months with state Department of Natural Resources leaders, hoping to keep Watson Mill’s “state park” status and to have state staff members on hand to take reservations for the park during peak usage months.
Oglethorpe County leaders agreed to help cover a portion of the cost.

Wait Oglethorpe county ain't going to pay but $5,000. a year and Madison county will have to pay the other $21,000. this don't seem fair? I always thought Madison Co. would pay half and Oglethorpe Co. would pay half? Everyone get off the tracks now because I see a train wreck coming? Now the Madison Co. BOC will tell the oglethorpe Co. BOC that they didn't pay enough to have an equal say in how the park is run? I can see it now like kids in the sand box? One kid says I brought more toys so you have to play what I want and how I want to play?

This park is dangerous. I am surprised no one has been seriously hurt or worse here. Put our local game warden's here and not catching kids in canoe's or kayak's. At least canoe / kayak kids bring money to county by buying stuff but drug dealers and our local good ole non responsible boys do not do that.

mc- Just you wait when somwonw does get seriously hurt and they sue the people in charge of the park AND do you know who that will be? US the tax payers of Madison Co. then the BOC will see that taking over this park wasn't such a good ideal BUT Madison Co. BOC will try to lay the law suit at Oglethorpe counties feet? BUT I think since Madison County is paying most of the cost to keep up the park they should pay most of the law suit? I give it less than 2 years before someone sues Madison county?

That's a cheap way out ! I thought the park was half in Madison Co. and half in Oglethorpe Co. ? So if it is then it should be split for each county to pay half the expense or better yet close the dang thing and save the taxpayers money !
