Reservations will soon be available for the Watson Mill State Park pavilion, the site of numerous family reunions and other gatherings.
Chip Chandler of the Friends of Watson Mill State Park informed county commissioners Monday that the group will provide $3,000 to keep the pavilion functional.
“We want this (pavilion) to be open as fully as possible,” said Chandler, noting that the pavilion rental fees are actually a money maker and that the state Department of Natural Resources was “shooting themselves in the foot” by shutting it down.
Madison County commissioners agreed 4-1 April 2 — with Jim Escoe providing the lone “no” — to approve a contract for $30,000 with the DNR to maintain the park for one year. Escoe has said he doesn’t want to see any local taxpayer money spent on the park.
The contract includes the $3,000 contribution from the Friends of the Park, who are funded by Friends membership fees, and a $5,000 contribution from the Oglethorpe County government. Part of the park is actually in Oglethorpe County.
