A homeless man in for court on a temporary protective order charge was arrested on multiple charges last week after he struggled with an officer questioning him about a bag found under a woman’s car in the courthouse parking lot.
Pericles Terrance Statiras, 41, was charged with obstruction, aggravated stalking, marijuana possession less than an ounce, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and possession of drug-related objects.
According to the incident report, a courthouse employee reported that there was a duffle bag under a vehicle at the south end of the building. After finding out who the vehicle belonged to, officer Shane Sartor found the woman in the courtroom and had her come outside to meet with deputy Willie Wilbanks. The object turned out to be a bag wrapped in a motorcycle jacket that smelled strongly of marijuana.
The woman said the jacket might belong to the man (Statiras) and that she was there for a TPO against him. Statiras was also located in the courtroom and taken to officer Wilbanks’ office where he became irate and tried to take the bag from Wilbanks. A scuffle ensued and Statiras was subdued, at which point he said he couldn’t breathe. EMS was summoned to the scene to check him out and told him to slow his breathing and that he was OK. A search of the bag found four knives, a lot of mail, a marijuana pipe and marijuana and $3,400 in cash in a wallet.
