Assistant Elbert County Comprehensive High School principal Chuck Colquitt has been named the next principal at Madison County Middle School.

He will replace Matt Boggs, who is retiring from the position.

The county school board approved the hiring at a special Tuesday evening meeting.

County school superintendent Dr. Allen McCannon said 18 people applied for the job and five interviews were conducted.

“We felt he (Colquitt) had outstanding references and an excellent track record for the last four years as assistant principal at Elbert County,” said McCannon, who added that Colquitt has 22 years of experience in education.

Prior to his assistant principal’s duties, Colquitt served as head football coach at Washington Wilkes Middle School, the athletic director and head football coach at Elbert County Middle School and the social studies department head at Elbert County High School.

“I have gained insight as a teacher, coach and administrator concerning the challenges facing middle and high schools,” wrote Colquitt in his application letter to the Madison County School System. “I have first-hand experience in trying to address issues through my position as assistant principal for curriculum.”

Colquitt said Elbert County High School has made great improvements during his administrative tenure.

“As a school team, we have moved forward in our instruction and achievement,” said Colquitt. “We now see ourselves at the forefront of changes in education.”

The new MCMS principal said he hopes to do the same in Madison County.

“As principal, my vision for Madison County Middle School will be in the same vein and I will continue to ‘think outside the box’ in addressing challenges faced by middle schools.”

Was there not someone in the county qualified for this job rather than going outside the county looking for someone ?

I didn't see the applications but I heard that a VERY qualified lady (already at the school)
was passed over. This lady surely knew the students, teachers, staff and any other things
about the school that would have put her well ahead of someone coming from outside the system. I can't speak for the school board but I think this is another boo boo on their part.

Yeah, we heard the same thing and as I understand it she was very well qualified and very well liked by everyone too !
Its a shame we can't hire someone that's familiar with our students and staff !

Shame on Allan McCannon! From what I hear Mr. Colquitt didn't even make the final cut on interviews but somehow landed the "big fish" thanks to a "railroad job" by Mr. McCannon. Mr. McCannon, you sir should resign in disgrace for letting the parents and children of Madison County down. The days of Boss Hogg should be gone from rural Georgia if our young assets are going to compete on a national and global level.

Mr. Colquitt, I don't know you yet but soon will. I welcome you here and hope you are up to the job. Let me be blunt, football is not a priority and neither is coaching. Those are activities you can enjoy outside your work life. Your only priority is academic excellence at Madison County Schools. I'll be one that will be looking for out of the box thinking.

Very disappointing that Madison County would go outside of the county to hire someone vs. promoting from within in the system when there was a qualified female candidate that applied for the position. Dr. Allen McCannon states above and I quote "outstanding references and an excellent track record for the last four years as assistant principal at Elbert County," but fails to mention that he was an assistant principal at the High School level NOT Middle School (very big difference)AND that his former school has NOT made AYP in the last 4 years. This makes me question the true definition for "excellent track record.“ It is also very ironic that the High School principal resigned shortly following the announcement of the new Middle School principal- it’s hard to believe that the superintendent as well as the board were not already aware of this and if his track record was so excellent at a High School level that he was not placed in the high school vacant position-but I am sure that no one knew that the principal was stepping down.... I have been in this county for over 28 years and I have children that have been thru Madison County School system- I am very disappointed in this decision!

This is so sad! His school has not passed AYP in the past, what is he supposed to do for our kids? He has high school experience and no middle school experience, again what can he do for our kids! In addition, someone please tell me how in the world he is so qualified. I'm a very active parent in the school and I agree, there was a very qualified lady their who could have stepped into this role, received a very well deserved promotion based on proven results and she would have been exactly what our kids needed! This is just ridiculous! Very upset to say the least.

Oh and this newspaper seems a little sketchy on the whole thing too.

Last Tuesday, the board announced the new principal.
In the paper edition of the Madison County Journal on Thursday, the decision was announced BUT there was no mention in the online version, where comments could be left.
The online version did not acknowledge this decision until Monday at MIDNIGHT. By then, the article was getting pushed to the back pages, where I guess they hoped nobody would comment.

Now, they are not printing all the comments that are being submitted. I know of at least two comments that were "subjected to moderation before being displayed" and were not displayed because I guess they spoke too much of the truth.

Seems a little suspicious to me!

I understand the Madison Journal Online does not want to compete with it's "paper" paper. As it is free, if it featured everything that is in the "paper" paper or only some of it at the time of publishing, very few people would pay for the "paper" paper. As was explained here previously, they are making a transition from "paper" to online and the full paper will be available soon online for a fee. I will be happy to pay a fee and not have to deal with all that"paper", hauling it to the recycling center all the time.

Do we know what those comments contained that were not posted? Judging by all the nasty comments the paper allows on here, they must have been pretty bad if not obscene.

Personally I feel like our school system is in danger of losing its status as being stabile and working for the benefit of our students. When I have tried to speak to teachers who I've known well for years and who have enjoyed working in our middle school, they seem upset but are hesitant to say much about what has happened. One teacher actually told me that she was afraid to say anything because if you do speak out against decisions that are made then you become the next target. How terrible that these teachers who have enough challenges and burdens placed on them to feel oppressed, silenced, and afraid everyday that they are at work? Who evaluates the superintendent and the school board? Someone needs to step in and reclaim these schools for the benefit of our children. I suppose it is up to us citizens of Madison County to vote out the current school board members to secure a fair and ethical future for our children.

Why in the world would someone choose an out of county high school ap in this position? ( and please dont say bc he was a middle school AD )Especially when people are saying a highly qualified candidate in the county applied? Not to mention the state has been working in his school to get them where they need to be! What will it take for the superintendent/board of education to put our kids first instead of politics? This train wreck doesn't make sense.
If this guy is so good why is he not (or can he not) replacing the high school principal? Answer: he's not that good?????

For all those questioning why this person was selected over other qualified applicants - the article states "Prior to his assistant principal’s duties, Colquitt served as head football coach at Washington Wilkes Middle School, the athletic director and head football coach at Elbert County Middle School and the social studies department head at Elbert County High School." Mystery solved!! I would have hoped the appicant would have been based on his/her education and accomplishments regarding school performance in academic areas - not sports!

That's kind of what I thought, but then I know nothing about his intellect or committment to education. His sports involvement may speak to his school committment. I assume Dr. McCannon knows way more about him than we do. It's a done deal at this point so we should support Colquitt and see how he does. We'll be watching.

First how do you know this person that works at the school was highly qualified? Having a high degree and being liked doesnt get you the job. Now Im not saying this person coming in is. Unless you work in the school and see the interactions then none of us know. Dr.McCannon makes decisions the the betterment of our school. We have to trust him in this process. For Mr. Colquitt to bash a man because his school didnt make ayp is obsurd. Our high school hasnt made it in years. Our middle school didnt make it last year. If you have a problem get a degree go apply for a job work your way up the ladder and you can make these decisons. If your worried about your kids raise them up right and you shouldnt have any problems. Last note quit complaining....

Mr. McCannon is the same person who stood as a character witness for Mark Goss, who now is behind bars at a Federal prison in Florida for scaming a few hundred thousand out of the elderly in our community. Never really had an issue with him till now, but starting to wonder about some of his decisions. Seems the right thing to do would have been to look within, all things being equal...maybe they weren't. Curious what the lure to the new principal was, I guess the message sent is dedication and hard work are really not a factor for our Board.

Whoa. Hold on. McCannon testified IN SUPPORT of Mark Goss?!?

The Mark Goss who used the CHURCH to ROB all kinds of seniors out of their life savings?

McCannon should be fired for that alone.
