The City of Comer has received 37 applications to fill the position of Chief of Police.
The office is open following the resignation of Brent Zellner who is running for the Democratic nomination for Sheriff of Madison County. A number of these applications came from out of state.
The city council is conducting workshops and meetings to narrow the field and select those candidates to be interviewed for the job. They hope to narrow the list to the top seven.
In other business during its July meeting, the council once again heard complaints about speeding on Madison Street. Pam Moore of that street addressed the council about problems she has walking her special needs daughter in the area.
Mayor Jody Blackmon apologized to Moore because she does not feel safe, and promised to do a better job. The council agreed to move the flashing speed warning sign to Madison Street and to instruct the city police to seek better ways to enforce the speed limit on Madison Street._
Harry Cannon of the Comer Lions Club addressed the council about the possibility of building a new city park over the drainage ditch between downtown and the shed used as the Comer Farmers’ Market. He presented drawings of what a facility there might look like and asked for permission to continue exploring the idea. The council agreed that the plans were excellent and pledged to do all they can to help.
Mayor Blackmon reported on the road construction projects on Hwys. 98 and 72. The new turn lane at Comer Elementary School is nearing completion, and repairs have been made to Hwy. 72 at the traffic light at the Hwy. 98 intersection. The street had been damaged by heavy trucks stopping for the traffic light.
The council gave final approval to installing a new baffle and aerator in the water treatment pond which will bring the facility up to the requirements of the Georgia Environmental Commission.
Once again, the council addressed the problem of trash pick up in the city. A few residents continue to pile excessive amounts of tree limbs on the street. The city has a rule establishing the minimum size of such piles. Residents are responsible for amounts over the legal minimum. The city attorney assured the council that they have the power to enforce city policy. After a warning letter, the council can ask the city court to access fines for those ignoring the policy.
The city authorized repairs to the Learning Center to include painting and caulking. The building is leased to the state for a literacy program.
Shows a lack of judgment on his part.
Mr. Zellner and others may be a voice in the wilderness, but so was Jesus, M.L.King, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous and of Mothers Against Drunken Driving. So were/are all the whistle-blowers in the tobacco industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the nuclear power industry, the chemicals industry and Big Ag. When something is not right, they spoke up, even when no one wanted to hear them. I respect that.
Quit job to run as a democrat in this county?
I hope he has a plan "B".
