A Danielsville man was arrested recently after he allegedly struck his girlfriend during a 4th of July cookout on Hill Street in Comer.
Steven Lavern Shelnut, 47, 4990 Danielsville Street, Danielsville, was charged with one count of battery (family violence).
According to the incident report, officer Michael Moore responded to Hill Street where he found the victim walking along the road. She told Moore she had been hit in the mouth by her boyfriend, who accused her of flirting with another man at the cookout. Moore and officer Brandon Moss returned to the scene with the victim, where they found Shelnut sitting outside with a beer in his hand. He asked them “what the #$%^ did they want?” They told him he was under arrest for battery and he began to curse the officers. Moore noted that it took two sets of handcuffs to secure Shelnut due to his size. After being placed in the patrol car, he reportedly beat his head into the safety cage of the car. On the way to jail, he allegedly stated that if Moore would pull over and take his handcuffs off he would “beat his #$%.” Moore advised dispatch to hold onto a copy of the recording where Shelnut was hitting the victim while she was on the phone with 9-1-1.
In a second arrest, Travis Marvin Burbage, 31, 121 Sandy Springs Drive, Athens, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, receipt, possession, or transfer of a firearm by a convicted felon or felony first offender and a probation violation after officer Alan Stratton was dispatched to a “suspicious person” walking along Crabapple Hollow Road. He found Burbage walking along the road and noted that he appeared nervous and out of breath. At one point he stated that he had a gun and Stratton placed him in handcuffs and patted him down, where he found a gun in his pants line and three bullets in his pocket. Burbage reportedly told Stratton he had just found the gun near a stump at the wood line. Stratton noted the gun did not appear to have been on the ground.
