Madison County’s Kevin Ledford has been named the 2012 “Person of Courage” award winner by The Cottage, a local center that assists sexual assault and child abuse victims.
Ledford, the captain of the Poca Volunteer Fire Department, was recognized for his “tremendous strength, bravery and sacrifice as first responder,” organizers said.
Ledford returned to work shortly after receiving a kidney transplant.
“Ledford deserves to be recognized as a Person of Courage because despite issues with his kidneys, he has continually given back to his community through his service within the Poca (Volunteer Fire Department),” according to Ledford’s nomination letter on The Cottage website.
Ledford was honored with the “Person of Courage” award Sunday at Bishop Park in Athens. He was also given a 42-inch flat screen television.
The Cottage accepted nominees from four counties, including Madison, Oconee, Clarke and Oglethorpe.
The courage award helped raise funds for the Cottage, with people allowed to vote as many times as they wanted at $1 a vote.

Great way to raise money! Honor folks that matter by having the community putting their money where their mouth is. It accomplishes two wonderful things at once. Congratulations to Mr. Ledford. I thank all voluteer fire fighters for their sacrifices to serve us.
