The Madison County School System showed district-wide improvements between 2011 and 2012 in every subject area of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), according to numbers released recently in the Georgia Department of Education (DOE) report.
Meanwhile, some county CRCT test scores exceeded state averages, while others were behind the Georgia average. Students in grades three through eight take the test, which is administered each spring.
Superintendent Dr. Allen McCannon said he is “proud of the hard work of our students and staff.”
“Everyone’s hard work has paid off,” said McCannon. “We can now see areas where we need to refocus our energy and resources so that all Madison County students can succeed. We are preparing our students so that they are ready to make the transition to the new Common Core Georgia Performance Standards to be implemented in fall 2012.”
Below are highlights of Madison County’s test scores in comparison to the 180 school districts in the state and the 13 school districts in the North East Georgia Regional Educational Service Area (RESA).

Schools show improvement on CRCT
•Mathematics: Overall, 92 percent of students in grades three through five met or exceeded state mathematics standards, an increase of four percentage points from 2011. Overall, 84 percent of students in grades six through eight met or exceeded state mathematics standards, an increase of six percentage points from 2011. Grades six and eight made the greatest gains (11 percentage points for grade six and seven points in grade eight) from 2011 to 2012. Grade six had 81 percent meet or exceed state standards and grade eight had 82 percent meet or exceed state standards.
•Mathematics Highlights: System elementary grades rank in the top 13 percent or better in the state in each grade level – top seven percent of the systems in third grade (12th highest scoring system in the state, third highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 12 percent system in fourth grade (20th highest scoring system in the state, fourth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 13 percent of the systems in fifth grade (22nd highest scoring system in the state, fifth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area. Third grade made the highest gains of six percentage points from 2011 to 2012.
•System middle school ranks are the top 47 percent system in sixth grade, bottom 32 percent in seventh grade, and top 34 percent eighth grade. In grades six and eight there was significant growth, 11 percentage points in grade six from 2011 to 2012 and seven percentage points in grade eight. Grade seven made a slight drop of one percentage point.
•Reading: Overall, 96 percent of students in grades three through five met or exceeded state reading standards, the same percentage of students passed in 2011. The fifth grade students, however, moved to the top six percent of performance in the state. Overall, 95 percent of students in grades six through eight met or exceeded state reading standards, an increase of two percentage points from 2011. Grade six made the great gains (four percent) from 92 percentage points passing in 2011 to 96 percent passing in 2012.
•Reading Highlights: system elementary grades rank in the top 23 percent or better in the state in each grade level – top 20 percent system in third grade (35th highest scoring system in the state, sixth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 23 percent of the systems in fourth grade (41st highest scoring system in the state, sixth highest scores system in the NEGA RESA area); top 5 percent system in fifth grade (ninth highest scoring system in the state, third highest system in the NEGA RESA area).
•System middle school state ranks are at the top 6 percent (sixth grade), bottom 40 percent (seventh grade), and bottom 43 percent (eighth grade). Sixth and eighth grades are ranked ninth in the RESA area and tenth place in seventh grade in the RESA area.
•English/Language Arts: Overall, 96 percent of students in grades three through five met or exceeded state English/Language Arts standards, an increase of four percentage points from 2011. Overall, 92 percent of students in grades six to eight met or exceeded state English/Language Arts standards, an increase of two percentage points from 2011. Grade six made the great gains (six percent) from 87 percent passing in 2011 to 93 percent passing in 2012.
•English/Language Arts Highlights: system elementary grades rank in the top 23% or better in the state in each grade level – top 23 percent system in third grade (41st highest scoring system in the state, sixth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 21 percent system in fourth grade (37th highest scoring system in the state, fifth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 12 percent system in fifth grade (20th highest scoring system in the state, fourth highest system in the NEGA RESA area).
•System middle school state ranks are at the top 48 percent (sixth grade) with 93 percent passing, bottom 10 percent (seventh grade) with 88 percent passing, and bottom 35 percent (8th grade) with 95 percent passing. Sixth grade is ranked ninth in the 13 system RESA area, seventh grade is ranked twelfth, and eighth grade is ranked eleventh for English/Language Arts.
•Science: Overall, 88 percent of students in grades three through five met or exceeded state science standards, a decrease of 1 percentage point from 2011. Overall, 78 percent of students in grades six through eight met or exceeded state science standards, an increase of three percentage points from 2011 to 2012. Grade six made the greatest gains (13 percentage points) from 2011 to 2012. Grade six had 82 percent students meet or exceed state science standards.
•Science Highlights: System elementary grades rank in the top 20 percent or better in the state in each grade level – top 12 percent of systems in third grade (21st highest scoring system in the state, sixth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 19 percent of systems in fourth grade (33rd highest scoring system in the state, sixth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 20 percent of systems in fifth grade (36th highest scoring system in the state, 6th highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area. Fourth grade made the highest gains of four percentage points.
•The middle school ranks are: the top 21 percent of the 180 systems in sixth grade, bottom 20 percent of the systems in seventh grade, and top 42 percent of the systems in eighth grade. In grade six there was significant growth, 13 percentage points from 2011 to 2012. Grade seven made a drop of six percentage points from 2011 to 2012, grade eight increased two percentage points.
•Social Studies: Overall, 88 percent of students in grades three through five met or exceeded state social studies standards, an increase of two percentage points from 2011. Overall, 79 percent of students in grades six through eight met or exceeded state social studies standards, a decrease of one percentage point from 2011. Grades six made the greatest gains (12 percentage points) from 2011 to 2012. Grade six had 85 percent of students meet or exceed state standards and grade eight had 83 percent meet or exceed state standards. Grade seven had a significant drop (9 percent) from 2011 to 2012 with 70 percent passing, ranking in the bottom 32 percent of the state and twelfth in the 13 RESA systems.
•Social Studies Highlights: System elementary grades rank in the top 20 percent or better in the state in each grade level – top 16 percent of the systems in third grade (28th highest scoring system in the state, sixth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 20 percent of the systems in fourth grade (35th highest scoring system in the state, fifth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area); top 15 percent of the systems in the state in fifth grade (26th highest scoring system in the state, sixth highest scoring system in the NEGA RESA area. Third grade made the highest gains of four percentage points from 2011 to 2012 with 87 percent who met or exceeded state standards.
•The middle school ranks are the top 11 percent of the systems in sixth grade, bottom 32 percent in seventh grade, and top 27 percent of the systems in eighth grade. In grade six, there was significant growth, 12 percentage points from 2011 to 2012. Grade seven made a drop of nine percentage points and grade eight dropped four percentage points.
The CRCT 2012 administration was based on the Georgia Performance Standards, the 2013 administration will focus on the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in reading, English/language arts and mathematics. Common Core Standards will be used by each state, with the exception of Alaska and Texas. Beginning with the 2015 administration, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment will be used to measure student proficiency in reading, mathematics and English/language arts, while the CRCT will continue to be used for science and social studies.

In grade six, there was significant growth, 12 percentage points from 2011 to 2012. Grade seven made a drop of nine percentage points and grade eight dropped four percentage points.
The CRCT 2012 administration was based on the Georgia Performance Standards, the 2013 administration will focus on the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in reading, English/language arts and mathematics. Common Core Standards will be used by each state, with the exception of Alaska and Texas.
