Dear Editor:

What happened to change the starting quarterback position at Madison County High School? We were anticipating our senior quarterback to return this year after the great season he had last year passing, scrambling and running. He was also named one of the key returning players as quarterback in the GA High School Magazine after completing 60.1 percent pass completion (89 for 148) for 1,236 yards and eight touchdowns, while rushing for 289 yards and six touchdowns last year.

Mr. Owens, you are the head coach, and you are responsible for setting the starting positions and if you can mistreat a young man that way (especially during his senior year) we the taxpayers of Madison County are ashamed to know that our superintendent and our school board would allow you to work for our school system, especially since you do not even live in this county.

Mr. Owens, does the word “nepotism” ring a bell? Do the right thing or go coach in the county you live – Walton County.

Correction..."We the taxpayers" could give a hoot who is playing football for whom. Let them all play a few minutes each, they're children, let them have fun.

"We the taxpayers" have far more pressing concerns. Careful what you wish for, Mr. Young. You might be surprised how many "taxpayers" would like to do away with wasting too much "taxpayer" money that is supposed to be for EDUCATION on children's recreation facilities.

We "RESIDENTS" and parents of Madison county high school students care a great deal! Especially when one child hasn't shown any better performance than our senior who is being benched. The way I see it the only thing that our senior quarterback does not have to offer is the DNA!!!
Thanks coach!Way to set a great example for our youth.(just work the system to your advantage).

No, YOU, care a great deal. You, and those 10 other parents who think what happens in childrens games has any bearing on anything. I could give a donkey's behind which child is playing where. As long as they are making straight A's, they should be allowed to play. if they aren't making straight A's, that is evidence that they need to spend more time studying and less time playing. Our county has more pressing concerns than games played by children!

Yes, I do care a great deal! Just so you know both young men are honor roll students and have a very bright future ahead. It is just about fairness not favortism. Even a "great coach" and "man of faith" can be guilty of favortism when it comes down to his own child and another child. It is human nature. We all want the most and the best of everything for our children. My opinion won't change anything but know that theres more than "10 others" who feel the same as I.

I want to let the people of Madison County know from a mom's perspective who is involved in many ways with the MC football team. Coach Owens is a great coach. Spencer Beard is such a great young man who has a great future ahead of him and I see him always smiling and encouraging his fellow players. He is good no matter what position he is allowed to play. As a person who sits in the stadium game after game... I can see that MC is supported by the score of the game and not because we have true team spirit. Coach Owens is a coach who truly cares about the boys on the team. He sees them not just now but in the future when they are out in a world making decisions that have nothing to do with football. We know that he has spent his own money on some of them. He cares for them when we see his face of disappointment when the team is not treated right. We as spectators have no right to yell from the stands or the paper how to coach. Just look at the record. Some years are building years and it is not about just one boy but about the whole team. He is not just teaching them about football but about life as a man who will have responsibilites. We have no right to judge someone's motives unless you have asked them personally... I appreciate all that Coach Owens has done for Madison County Football but more than that what he has invested in each young man for his future as a husband, father, and leader.... Life is not about a position but relationships.... It hurts our players to hear the fans yell out at them negatively instead of encouraging them no matter what the scoreboard says. The scoreboard does not determine their success in their present and future. I want to personally thank all the Coaches of Madison County for the Great Job they have done and will continue to do and for their families who sacrifice so much for our boys. It has been said that Coach Owens does not live in our area... It is not because his family hasn't tried to sell their house so maybe someone will buy it so they can save money on gas and time to and from... It is not our job to coach in any area because we are not out their sweating it for the "team". We should always encourage every student no matter what they do in sports.... I know it is hard work.... I have seen it and been involved in many ways with those boys. They are great....

Amen. As the father of two children who will either cheer for the team and play for the team, I agree whole-heartedly. It is more important to me that my son & daughter learn life lessons and how to be responsible, upstanding, christian adults. Lets face it, no (college)division one football player has come from Madison County ever! However, many have attended these schools based upon academics. That is not to say that winning a football game is not important but; it is winning in the game of life that matters.

I agree with some of things that you are commenting on, but really do you think Spencer would like to have had his spot taken by the coaches son. No! I think that is a special privilage for Mr. Owens its quite wrong to do so when it is Spencer's late year to play and he doesn't the position that he got for himself.

The saddest thing about this whole issue is it is driving
a wedge between team mates and friends. I hope that the
coachs will sit back and review what is going on and make
a step that we bring this team back together as a family.
Don't let this destroy the family this team has become.

Some of what may be pulling this team apart may be the fact that Spencer and his teammates may need to back Jacob and anyone else for that matter up and cheer them on when they are on that field and not be all about me. Hello their is no I in Team!! Just because you are not in the game at a particular time or in at a particular moment does not mean the game is over one person cannot WIN OR Lose a game for the whole team!!

I still say Spencer Baird is not being treated fairly and I still feel that this would not be an issue if the other quarterback was not the coach's child. I know what a great athlete spencer is thats why I dont feel it's right to treat the young man this way. Our other quarterback still has his "senior" year ahead of him. Yes, I think we all know that neither child will be playing pro football for a living and thats my point why not let the both young men play ball.(like last year!)

I think that Coach Owens is a great man of Faith and a man who stands for God. I think that what he does for the guys of our football team. His hardwork and dedication shows in many ways with our guys on and off of the field. Though all of our games we play we may not win you can tell that our players are well coached!!
