A Hull man was arrested recently after officers were summoned to Hwy. 29 South regarding a domestic dispute between father and son that allegedly involved a gun.
James Steven Rice, 56, 5934 Hwy. 29 South, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
Hull man arrested after domestic dispute
According to the incident report, officer Brandon Hanley went to the scene where he found a vehicle speeding out of the driveway. Hanley stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver (Rice) who had a high caliber rifle lying across the front passenger seat. He was brought back to the residence where he began to interfere with the incident investigation by standing behind officers and interrupting the interviews. When asked to stop he refused, stating it was his property. After several moments of this type behavior, he was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car. A female at the scene said she was called by the suspect’s son and could hear the two engaged in a heated argument. She said that Rice was trying to leave but that “he did not need to be driving,” so his son took his keys. At that point, Rice allegedly retrieved a loaded gun and came outside, pointing it at his son. After a scuffle over the gun, Rice retrieved his car keys and left. She said Rice did not give her enough time to get out of the way and ran over the toes on her right foot.
In another arrest, a Colbert man was taken into custody after he almost struck a deputy’s patrol vehicle on Colbert Danielsville Road. Cedric James Cunningham, 30, 160 Rocky Drive, was charged with driving without a valid license, weaving over roadway, DUI/alcohol and endangering a child by DUI/alcohol or drugs. According to the incident report, corporal Joshua Smith was traveling south on Colbert-Danielsville Road when he met a blue Chevrolet Malibu traveling north that crossed the centerline almost striking his patrol vehicle. Smith maneuvered his car to the shoulder of the road to avoid being hit. He then pursued the vehicle, bringing it to a stop on McCarty Dodd Road. The driver (Cunningham) said he did not have, nor had he ever had, a driver’s license. Smith smelled alcohol on his breath and noted that his eyes were bloodshot. A woman and a 10-year old child were also in the vehicle.
