Colbert can expect a grocery store in late 2013.
Dill’s Food City has purchased property at the intersection of Hwy. 72 and Foote McClellan Road with plans to construct an approximate 30,000-square-foot store with a full deli.
“It’s great to see business coming in to the county,” said county industrial development authority executive director Marvin White. “This is something needed in Madison County.”
Dill’s, which has stores in Royston, Lavonia and Hiawassee, is expected to generate roughly $8-to-$10 million in revenues annually, with about $150,000 to $160,000 generated in local sales taxes for the county government from its two, one-cent taxes and another $75,000 to $80,000 for the school system from its education sales tax. The grocery store will also pay county property taxes for its Foote McClellan Road facility.
White approached county commissioners Nov. 5, asking them to consider footing the bill for road improvements on Foote McClellan Road. He said the business was interested in locating in Colbert if the BOC could help with some upgrades.
County commissioners agreed Monday to improve Foote McClellan Road near the entrance of the proposed grocery store. That work, however, will be done whenever the actual store construction begins. Commissioners said they don’t want to improve the road, then have the store change its plans. County engineer Phil Munro said the board’s financial commitment to the road upgrades is roughly $120,000.
White said the county may not have to pay anything for road improvements. The IDA has applied for a One Georgia Grant to cover roughly $377,000 in improvements at the intersection. This would include an excel/decal lane on Hwy. 72.
One Georgia grants are available for projects that create jobs in communities. And leaders anticipate 50 jobs created by the grocery store.
White didn’t have a date on when the grant might be approved.
Hard to believe, but good news for future employees and the tax digest.
