LETTER: Obama will be another FDR, ‘champion for the poor’

Dear Editor:

Powerful Washington special interests came close to privatizing Social Security in 2005 with the help of President George W. Bush and Senator McCain. Their approach would have resulted in profits of billions for those special interests. Those profits would come out of the pockets of every day Americans who would see their benefits cut and who would have to work to meet a higher retirement age before becoming eligible for Social Security. Barack Obama will not give them a second chance.

McCain and Palin can’t relate to the majority in our country. They represent the rich.

I am a white, as if that mattered, 61-year-old woman living in a predominantly “red” state. I ask why? Most of this state, now, thanks to the last eight years is below poverty level, homeless and jobless. What we always called the middle class is now in the ranks of the poor.

I worry for my children, their children and on down the line. When I look at them I want to cry for their future and I worry about the elderly going back to work in a society that has no worker rights.

I hear horror stories about the many Americans who are turned away from doctor’s offices and hospitals because they don’t have the right insurance or money to pay. My husband who has Humana could not make an appointment to have a melanoma cut off his upper lip because he did not have $30. They would not bill us so we had to wait and the cancer grew to twice its size in a couple of weeks.

My parents were born in the early 1900s and worked hard all their life to make living easier for their children. Their hero was Franklin D. Roosevelt, elected President in 1932, a Democrat who brought them out of the Great Depression. In 1935 President Roosevelt and his New Deal gave us Social Security. Along with the package came controls over banks and public utilities, he raised taxes on the rich and big corporations and he created a work relief program for the unemployed, which made the Democrats hated by the wealthy.

Woody Guthrie, a radical activist who championed labor unions and fought fascism, was another hero of that era and he wrote a song for Eleanor when her husband died praising him as an advocate to the poor. I believe Barack Obama will be another Franklin D. Roosevelt, a champion for the American poor.

FDR's programs are have a great deal to do with our current situation. Get off your #$%%@ and go to work!! Don't expect the government to coddle you.

If Obama is elected, there may very well be another push for sessesion in some states and I would gladly join that battle. We must fight for our freedom and realize that Obama is first and foremost...A MUSLIM!! Remember them? They are the ones that flew planes into the World Trade Center. They have sworn our destruction.

How could ANY red blooded American ecven THINK of voting for someone named Hussein? Have we all gone mad?

God, (not Allah) plese save us from ourselves! Obama is an American Hitler and we will be a third world country if he gets elected.

Susan,

Your statement “Most of this state, now, thanks to the last eight years is below poverty level, homeless and jobless” shocks me. Think about the area where you are writing about. This area has seen an economic boom recently and most people from Jackson, Madison, and Banks are doing well. I respectfully disagree with the alarmist statements that this “red state” is doing so horribly. The socialist programs that FDR put into place was partly due to the economic collapse that sent many in this country to doubt the countries survival. I take offense to your comparisons of the economic misfortunes of the 30’s and the economic situation of this area. We are not the American poor. We do not need the government to help us through life. We live in a great area and I am proud of our economic progress.

I am not sure where you live buthe Jackson, Madison, and Bankc county communitites were some of the hardest hit in the housing melt down. There were pages of forclosures every week in the papers. Gas and food have gone up so much that my weekly paycheck is only enough to cover child care, groceries and gas. Not that I make a tremendous amount of money but between my husband and I we used to be able to afford to eat at a nice place once a week, cook a couple of steaks on the grill on the weekends, buy new work shoes when we needed them, but our child clothes just because they were cute, not for the simple fact that she needed them. Now we are having trouble making it from week to week. we have cut out all eating out, trips, and any unnessary spending and we are still having trouble. I am not at all supporting Obama, I feel people should vote for who they beleive in. But wake up and look at the palnts closeing and cutting back. Look at the tent city that has reason off of loop 10 in Clarke county, look at the # of people struggling to buy gas and food and tell me this are is doing great. we are a red state, Ga is the top 10 states in forclosures. Companies are laying off, cutting production, consumers are nto buying beacuse most can't afford luxories they could two years ago. Wake up!! This is a comparison to be made. Not the a second Depression is not around the corner but it could be much closer than you seem to think. To some one who counts very pennie she has, it seems much much closer now.

Thank you for writing in with your editorial. I loved
reading it. I am glad to see that there are plenty of
other people in this "red" state that get it. I have
never figured out why so many lower or middle class people
in this state are supporting republicans. They just don't
realize that they are destroying themselves by voting in
higher taxes on themselves.
Obama's plan will save a family that makes around $75,000
about $1100 per year compared to McCain's $300 per year.
I'd rather have the $800 in my pocket from Obama's plan.

It really is unfortunate that the victim mentality preached for so long by the liberal left is spreading in America. Our country is what it is today because hard working people who didn't like where they were took action and made their lives better. It is a sad state when we expect Uncle Sam to provide for us. Roosevelt did some good things for this country but he also started us down the road to where we are now....lots of folks sitting back, expecting to have the government pay them to exist. Do you really think that my hard work and financial responsibility should be rewarded with a higher tax bill while others, content in their mediocrity, complain that it is not fair that I have more than they do? Don't buy into the idea that you are a victim.

I wouldn't say it was a personal attack at all. Just think that it is sad that one who cries about not having $30 for a co-pay cannot make enough money writing books to support her 61-year-old-self. She obviously is a gifted enough writer to be published, so is it much of a streach that this whole $30 co-pay is a story too?

I got news for ya, Wal-Mart and McDonald's are always hiring perhaps she should be working rather than complaining about her 'situation'. It isn't my fault that she and her rock-star husband spent their money on numerous cats, dogs, goats, fish, ducks and Bill, the pot bellied pig, rather than saving for retirement. Why should WE the working public be forced to support her? What has she done to merit retirement at 60? So, I need to work until I'm 90 to pay for her selfishness? No way! I am sure that the $30 could have been saved up by simply eating one of her many beloved animals. One of the goats would've made a nice BBQ sandwich or two.

We make choices in life and have to live with the consequences. She chose to retire and write books. If she can't make enough to pay for health co-pays, then get over somewhere and GET A JOB! Retirement is not a birthright, it is something to be planned and saved for. Obviously, planning was not as important as writing.

Slander? I didn't slander her. The definition of slander is: a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report.

What was false about the statement? Nothing. I said she was a writer. Is she not? I guess you are saying it malicous or defamatory then. I fail to see how stating the obvious, i.e. Susan must not be that great of a writer if $30 was an issue. If that wasn't the case, I would ASSUME that means she is a gifted writer and this letter is nothing more than fiction written to make the world around us seem so horrible that her husband was left for dead all because of a $30 co-pay....

Anyway, I did resort to hyperbole, because this is just so rediculous. Nothing casting doubt upon a letter to the editor can be said without one being accused of 'attacking' and spreading vicuous rumors. Grow up. I, unlike many people, do not just take anything I read as the gospel truth. I look to find out if it is a form letter (yes, repubs and demos use form letters to the editor) and then look to see who the author really is who they say they are. Get over it that people think that many of these stories peddled are BS, because that is what politics are today; using some sad horrible story to make people think that the evil right-wingers or evil left-wing pinko commies are going to do something horrible if they win.

Bob, Bob, Bob, and other naysayers, you assume too much. I pay my mortgage, don’t live in one of the many tent cities around here but I do know many who’ve lost their homes to greedy moneylenders and their jobs to illegals or because the jobs have been sent to some other country. Remember back when folks were getting big money on their homes, credit cards and living high on the hog. A friend in real estate told me that a few states were telling them to sell homes with no proof of citizenship, identity and no credit checks. I don’t know if that is a fact because I didn’t research it but I did see it happen with people I knew and to me.
I will explain my statement to you though since you seem so curious. When my hubby had the appointment to have the cancer removed my checking account was frozen because of identity theft and I kept it frozen until the sheriff and bank told me it was okay. Identity theft does happen and it can upset your world. The day he was scheduled I called the doctor and asked if they could bill us and they said no because they had too many owing money. We had to make another appointment and it took a couple of weeks to see them. And yes he is on disability and if you want to know why you can e-mail me at susankingsolver.com and ask.
My own mortgage company was taking money from my checking account for insurance on property in Florida that I don’t own. Had to get an attorney and still don’t have it fixed. I could sure use the money they stole from me. The company my husband works part time for is folding and he hardly ever gets paid. That’s been going on a couple of years now so I know a bit about just not having the money. I don’t borrow. In my letter to the editor I did not explain my financial story because I did not think it was called for but just for you I am doing this now.
Now for my books, yes I have a couple of books out and some short stories and articles. I showed the sheriff the royalty check from one of my books the day he came out about the identity theft and I remember telling him that because I was a writer some folks assumed I was rich. The check was for one dollar and forty-five cents. Stephen King I am not, I only dream to write a best seller one day. Hence the words (starving artists.) Bad arthritis prevents me from sitting at my desk so I don’t write as much as I used to. Well that and writer’s block.
But all of that is not important to the subject; in fact I don’t see where character assassination has any thing to do with what I was talking about. Reminds me of the 2004 Democratic rally in Athens when a bunch of us got together for our party and I’ll never forget this heavyset white man walking up to me, pulling his coat back and showing me his gun, telling me to shut up. The Republican Party has many bullies and they seem to think they can run this country with fear. As FDR said “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Thanks to that gentleman in Athens, I bought my first gun and I know how to use it. I call that common sense. No I don’t think Obama will make us give up our guns but I do think he will make it harder for the wrong people to own them, which is fine with me.
Our country is in a mess and after this week we are now trillions in debt and who is getting help. Not the folks in tent cities but the very ones who made this mess and caused many Americans to lose their jobs and homes. And it can happen to anyone of us.

And the owner of the link asks folks to let him know if any of the information is wrong. So much has happened it’s hard for folks to remember it all.
As for being a Democrat, well I left that party, because of the Clintons, not the Monica episode but for Nafta. It went from Reagan to Daddy Bush to Clinton who finally got the thing going and now Bush Jr. who has knocked it out of the ballpark. Free trade has destroyed our country and there is nothing anyone can say or no isms that can explain it away. You can blame it on FDR and all the Democrats ever lived but if you face reality you know where the blame lays. We used to be the richest country in the world and the most respected now we are at the bottom. God forbid we help anyone especially Americans let the Katrina and Ike survivors fend for themselves, the people whose lives were ruined by flooding and tornados or folks who are just too sick to work and make enough money to support themselves.
The borders are kept open and our country now has enough illegals to take over. I will say to Hilary’s comment, “there is no such thing as an illegal person” that yes there are illegals in our country and they hate us and they are also getting plenty of support from the rich and big corporations to destroy Americans. Doesn’t that get your attention; it sure gets mine. I have Mexicans and Filipinos in my family and I love them, I call them legal Americans because they went through our legal system. These others did not.
There is nothing anyone can say to some folks that will make them change but there are some folks out there who have the sense to know something is wrong and it’s to those I speak.
I believe Obama gets it and this Independent is voting for someone who I don’t think will be a yes man or bow to intimidation.

And last time I checked, we are the richest coutry there is. Why is it that we are still looked to for aid when natural disasters? I guess it's because we're so selfish, right?

I have no problem with helping those who ACTUALLY need help, but c'mon, how many of those 'needy' have a lifestyle that is better than the average European? Tell me why my money should go to foodstamps so someone can have a cell phone, SUV and HDtv? FDR instilled a seek help from the government attitude in people and it has gone way too far. It amazes me to see people think a politician can make their lives better. Neither Mr. Obama nor Mr. McCain can do much for you. You are in charge of your life. Of course everyone needs some help now & then. Charities, churches, & communities are there to help. More people would give more to charities if they were not taxed so heavily. America is the most charitable country in the history of this planet. To think you can vote a person in that will punish the "evil rich" & help the poor through taxation is disgusting frankly. If a majority of the people in a town of 100 people voted to take away all the wealth of the richest guy in town; would that be ok? NO! But people seem to find it ok to vote in politicians who threaten to do the same thing on an incremental basis. I know times are tougher than they were just a year ago but government is not going to save us all. BTW I do not support either of the 2 parties

Our Social Security

Franklin Roosevelt a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised:
That participation in the Program would be Completely voluntary,
That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program,
That the money the participants elected to put Into the Program would be deductible from Their income for tax purposes each year,
That the money the participants put into the Independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the General operating fund, and therefore, would Only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and
That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income. Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and if we get a Social Security check every month we are finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government and now to Dwight Eisenhower

in 1958 the first year that Congress voted to remove funds from Social Security and put it into the General Fund for Congress to spend.
If I recall correctly, it was a democratically Controlled Congress. And From what I understand, the Congress logic at that time was that there was so much money in Social Security Fund that it would never run out / be used up for the purpose it was intended / set aside for. Then comes Lyndon Johnson 36th.President,a Democrat

A: The Democratic Party, with Albert Gore, Jr. (Al Gore) casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the U.S. Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving Annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That's right! (Jimmy Carter) a Democrat, and the Democratic Party. Voted to give
Immigrants who moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! TheDemocratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it! Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!
And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!
If enough people read this, maybe a seed of Awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. Maybe not,
this ends my history lesson for the day ! but remember if the democrats try and tell you its the republicans fault its not! as for the housing crisis and wall street well both are to blame dems and repubs they sit there for years getting greedy ! the easy solution is term limits this way both parties have to work for the people to get what they want done as the clock tics !

I suppose the payments on your hi-def TV, your hot-tub, and your super-sized SUV are getting a bit difficult to make. Lay the blame where it belongs--squarely in your lap, for your luxurious living.
Our family lives within our means, ON PURPOSE, and because of that (called personal responsibility), we are not suffering at all during this so-called "crisis". BUT, if Obama gets in, we, and all RESPONSIBLE citizens, will have to bail all of you crybabies out, so that may change. After all, "redistribute the wealth" is the Democrat's mantra, isn't it?

Folks both sides can share blame as to the problems this country faces. And we as the electorate have to take some the blame as well. We the people elect people who tell us what they thing we would like to hear, not the truth. This country was founded on freedom, not "social or economic" security. It is up to us to live within our means. Too many people want to "keep up with the Jones" and get stuff to look good to the outside world. I have seen folks in a $300k house with nothing on the inside. Hell from the outside it looks great but on the inside it is rather empty. We need to look out for ourselves, be responsible. You can't be independent if your dependent on others for your survival.

in 2000 most folks liked bush in 2001 most folks liked bush in sept of 2001 95% of americans thought bush was right on about terrorist!for about a year most americans were united in 2003 they still liked bush in 2004 some were not so happy but bush got re-elected in 2005 when no w.m.d.'s were found in iraq they started to dislike bush but were very happy to get the first tax check in july without having to file in 2006 the republicans had a bad year some were voted out of office and replaced by democrats from 2000 to 2006 the stock market did good it even broke records surpassing the 15,000 mark and there were jobs here in the u.s. unemployment was down and wages were too! The democrats DO NOT and HAVE NOT had a voting majority in Congress. You need 60 members in the Senate to have a voting majority.

So, don't just vote Democrat for President, vote Democrat for Senate and House as well. The Republicans have CRASHED our economy...we need to SEND A MESSAGE and THROW THEM OUT.

No kidding that the democrats don't have a super-majority, but they DO HAVE A MAJORITY. They are in charge of the all of the commitees and control what GOES up for a vote and debate. It is time to grow up and get over it. The inaction in congress is the Pelosi/Reid leadership's problem, not the Republican's. YOU HAVE to work together. Last time I checked, a majority in Congress is 50% plus one.
Last time I checked, the democratcs had more 50% in both houses.

I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.
Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.
To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.
Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..
So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.
My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.
Of course, it would NOT be tax free.
So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.
Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.
That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.
But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket.
A husband and wife has $595,000.00.
What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?
Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved.
Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads
Put away money for college - it'll be there
Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
Buy a new car - create jobs
Invest in the market - capital drives growth
Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves
Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else
Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.
If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed
by one of our candidates for President.
If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!
As for AIG - liquidate it.
Sell off its parts.
Let American General go back to being American General.
Sell off the real estate.
Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.
Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."
But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion
We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC .
And remember, The plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.
Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.
