The new Hwy. 191 Bridge over Scull Shoal Creek in Madison County is now open to traffic.
Hwy. 191 over Scull Shoal Creek is approximately four miles northeast of Danielsville.
The bridge closed Dec. 27, 2011 and opened today at 2:50 p.m., 18 days ahead of the project completion date of Dec. 31, 2012.
The original bridge outlived its life expectancy and did not meet current design standards, Department of Transportation (DOT) officials said.
The new bridge improves safety and efficiency by minimizing the curves approaching the bridge and raised the bridge to remove the trough approaching the bridge. The new bridge features wide shoulders creating a refuge for motorists outside of the travel lanes if needed.
Officials said closing the bridge allowed the work to be completed in half the time (12 months instead of 24 months) and at a savings of $1.1 million less ($2.9 million) than keeping the existing bridge open while a new parallel bridge was built.
This $1.8 million construction project includes 0.438 mile of new roadway and the new bridge over Scull Shoal Creek. The contractor is E.R. Snell Contracting, Inc. of Snellville.
