•There are no blacks in elected positions on the board of commissioners, the school board or in city governments within the county.
•There are no blacks appointed to any boards (industrial authority, planning commission, etc.)
•There are no blacks employed in any office within the government complex, in the recreation department, on county road crews, EMS, etc.
•Only one black is in an administrative position within the school system.
•Only one black is in the sheriff’s department or city law enforcement.
As a black man, it is hard for me to believe there are no blacks qualified to fill positions of leadership within this county. I refuse to call it racism, but I struggle to find another word to explain why this condition still exists in the year 2013. When I ask the question, I get answers like, “We don’t get any applicants,” but no one, white or black, applies for positions appointed by boards. I have had pleasant conversations within county government, but I see no results. I realize that the percentage of blacks in the county is low, but to have this kind of record is a poor reflection on our leadership.
Industry and businesses looking for a place to locate may not be impressed by such a dismal record. Maybe this is not a concern for our leaders, but before this county will ever see its potential, inequality must be addressed. Its preservation gives our county a black eye. To say the least, we should be embarrassed and ashamed of a record such as this.
For blacks to visit the government complex and move around our county and see no one of color playing a role in our government or employed in any job is an outrage. For our leaders to bury their heads in the sand and say we don’t have a problem shows poor and divisive leadership. This problem must be addressed or we will still be considered the backwoods county of northeast Georgia.

According to colonial records, the first slave owner in the United States was a black man.
Prior to 1655 there were no legal chattel slaves in the colonies, only indentured servants. All masters were required to free their servants after their time was up. Seven years was the limit that an indentured servant could be held. Upon their release they were granted 50 acres of land. This included any black African purchased from slave traders. Blacks were also granted 50 acres upon their release.
Anthony Johnson was a Negro from modern-day Angola. He was brought to the US to work on a tobacco farm in 1619. In 1622 he was almost killed when Powhatan Indians attacked the farm. 52 out of 57 people on the farm perished in the attack. He married a female black servant while working on the farm.
When Anthony was released he was legally recognized as a “free Negro” and ran a successful farm. In 1651 he held 250 acres and five black indentured servants. In 1654, it was time for Anthony to release John Casor, a black indentured servant. Instead Anthony told Casor he was extending his time. Casor left and became employed by the free white man Robert Parker.
Anthony Johnson sued Robert Parker in the Northampton Court in 1654. In 1655, the court ruled that Anthony Johnson could hold John Casor indefinitely. The court gave judicial sanction for blacks to own members of their own race as chattel slaves. Thus Casor became the first permanent slave and Johnson the first slave owner.
Whites still could not legally hold a black servant as a chattel slave until 1670. In that year, the colonial assembly passed legislation permitting free whites, blacks, and Indians the right to own blacks as slaves.
By 1699, the number of free blacks prompted fears of a “Negro insurrection.” Virginia Colonial ordered the repatriation of freed blacks back to Africa. Many blacks sold themselves to white masters so they would not have to go to Africa. This was the first effort to gently repatriate free blacks back to Africa. The modern nations of Sierra Leone and Liberia both originated as colonies of repatriated former black slaves.
However, black slave owners continued to thrive in the United States.
By 1830 there were 3,775 black families living in the South who owned black slaves. By 1860 there were about 3,000 slaves owned by black households in the city of New Orlean.

Something even more troubling and bizarre is the fact that even some of those who are being discriminated against

Its all based on skin color. Now what is occurring is discrimination turned around and being perpetrated against another group of people

Try to explain this and you are dehumanized,vilified and labeled and treated as though you were something other than human .
Belittled and marginalized or even worse. I have even been called Uncle Tom. Why is it that if equality was the intended target of such legislation does it have a list of
people considered minorities who are granted certain special privilege and consideration while one group in particular is denied and scoffed at and demonized if they even utter a sound of their discontent for this clear form of discrimination and injustice ?
How is discriminating against what I can only tell is white people, promote any equality or equal justice .
Now if I was a white person ,I would be marching and protesting in the streets of Selma, Birmingham,Atlanta ,Washington DC
and any other city or state that promotes this kind of discrimination and demanding that I was given equality and my freedom back along with my equal rights ,demanding a change in the law.
Those in the black community who know this is wrong should also join arms with them and push back against this insanity just as many whites did when the situation was reversed.
Generations of people of my color have lived on welfare of one kind or another Reparations as I call it , while the majority ,whites are being taxed to pay for this and quite often denied access to any of these programs intended to help the impoverished and needy when they find themselves in need. I have seen many who have become impoverished and needy in this rescission, depression or which ever you prefer to call it.
To me the mere fact that whites have been forced to pay the taxes to support this is in my mind a form of slavery in itself .
I only hope that my words will strike home the truth rather than invoke more division in an already torn apart and troubled Nation that I now call

Anyone who qualifies for government assistance of any kind is eligible for it regardless of minority or majority status. Everyone who pays taxes, regardless of their minority or majority status, partly pays to support these eligible receivers of assistance.

White people have not been singled out to pay the cost of welfare for black people. There are huge numbers of black people who are very successful. I have worked with many of them in my 30+ year career in Atlanta. They pay the same taxes other successful people pay, part of which goes to support less forutnate citizens of any kind.
I don't know where you got the ideas you seem to harbor, but I believe you have been mislead. Be careful who you listen to in this country. Everyone has their own agenda and it's hard to sort it all out when there is no longer proper journalsim here, only biased reporting from every corner.

I can hear you laughing. After all, most CEOs and political leaders are white males. But when you leave that top 0.1%, things look different.
I have career counseled almost 2,000 people, and unless they're stars, my white male clients have a tougher time getting hired than do women and minorities.
We accept as gospel the widely-reported statistic that women earn 77 cents on the dollar. Fact is, according to research by Dr. Warren Farrell, when all variables are controlled for: for example, actual hours worked, experience, work hazards, commute distance, and performance evaluations, for the same work, women earn more than men.
Yet white males continue to see more and more efforts to help everyone except white males:
Employers often practice reverse discrimination, if only because they fear the EEOC will count noses. And when there's a downsizing, employers resist firing women and minorities, knowing that many of them would file a wrongful termination suit.
If minorities or women receive less pay or are so-called underrepresented in a particular profession, for example, in the boardroom, women's groups insist it's mainly because of sexism, that white males have essentially erected a glass ceiling through which they allow pitifully few women to seep. Privately, however, most of my female clients (I've worked with 1,400!), most of whom are well-educated and middle class, say they are unwilling to put in the long hours it takes to rise to the top. They want a moderate worklife with plenty of time for spouse, children, and/or avocations. Many more of my male clients are willing to work the long hours it takes to rise to the top.
The media gives millions of dollars of free exposure to the sexism argument, for example, unquestioningly promulgating the misleading "women earn 77 cents on the dollar" statistic yet gives virtually no exposure to opposing views.
And if men are underrepresented, for example, as they are in colleges--colleges are now 59% women, 41% men--you barely hear a peep about it in the media.
Professional baseball, football, and basketball are dominated by minorities. Ever hear the media decry the underrepresentation of white males?
Most seriously, men die six years younger than women, yet there's no call for more spending on men's health. Where are all those advocates who scream when women and minorities get the short end of the stick? They're still calling for more medical studies on women even though the days are long gone when most medical research was done on men. Every day, it seems there's another fundraiser for breast cancer" buy a Loew's movie ticket, a dollar goes to breast cancer. Buy a bra, a dollar goes to breast cancer. Buy a US postage stamp, money goes to breast cancer! When was the last time you heard of a fundraiser for heart attack, the main cause of early death among men? The Oakland A's, a team watched mainly by men, have a breast cancer day. They don't have a prostate cancer day or heart attack day. Meanwhile, there are more than four widows for every widower.
The rule seems to be: discriminate--as long as the ones being discriminated against are white males.
Defenders of discrimination against white males argue that it is needed to level the playing field, for example, to compensate for the legacy of slavery. But do two wrongs make a right? Should the oppressed become the oppressor? Activists said yes. We need reverse discrimination temporarily. Well, it’s already been 40 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and activists demand reverse racism more fervently than ever.
The real question is why have African-Americans not achieved socioeconomic parity? If it is, as the activists claim, because of the legacy of slavery and lingering racism, then why is there not one country of the world’s 200—whether majority black or majority non-black, previously colonized or not—in which blacks have even an average standard of living, while other groups such as the Jews, who have been persecuted for thousands of years—from the Roman times through the Inquisition, through the pogroms, through the Holocaust, and with anti-Semitism remaining even today--on average, do well. Asians have suffered discrimination in the US, even placed in internment camps, yet, on average, do well. Arab- and Muslim-Americans have been and are subject to prejudice, yet have done better than have African Americans. I believe we must engage in a more thoughtful examination of the reasons why African-Americans continue to struggle before imposing the terrible pain of reverse discrimination on white males. In my office, many, many of my white male clients--competent, well-adjusted people--have cried (and occasionally yelled) in frustration at their inability to get a decent job while less qualified minorities and women leapfrog them.
To impose reverse discrimination on white males seems particularly unfair because, as a group, they’ve hardly been a scourge on society. Yes, males, of all races, make the wars. But they’ve also died in the wars protecting us. White males have also been largely responsible for some of humankind’s greatest achievements: from refrigeration to television, Amazon to Xerox, Plato to Beethoven to Spielberg. White male scientists brought about most of the medical advances that have extended our life expectancy from 50 in 1900 to 78 today. In addition to those exceptional people, most white males, like many other people, work hard to make our lives work: they build our houses, our cars, maintain our telephone poles, etc., etc., etc.
So, next time you hear a plea to support women and blacks, you might save just a little kindness for the not-so-terrible, no-longer so privileged white male.
That's white males between the age of 18- 55.
Why is this not considered inequality or discrimination ?
Yet the whole argument for the civil rights movement, and the women's liberation movement was based on the Declaration Of Independence .
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
However that is absolutely not true today for white males . Yet nobody finds this to be wrong .Why is that ? Whether anyone knows Marty or not is irrelevant . (think the only problem white males, all males really, are having is increasing civilization and progress. Males were originally made for sex, violence, competition, fighting, arguing, dominating and using their physical strength to accomplish all those things. Where do you get this insulting stuff? There’s little need for all that in today’s world, not even very much protecting of and providing for women, with or without children. Women can manage in the modern world to provide for themselves and their children, though extra help of some kind is so much more preferable. Well you sure want get it with a philosophy like that. That,s one of the most blatant sexist feminist and discriminating remarks I believe I have ever heard and I find it really offensive . Is that what you taught our children in school ? It no wonder we have the social problems we have today. Keep talking and prove my point. Good luck to you the next time you need Law Enforcement or our Military . I find nothing civilized at all about your remarks . Grow your own food ,build your own house ,build your own roads and bridges, fix your own car . etc,etc , you would have never had the opportunities you have had if it wasn't for men and the real sacrifices they made being part of that equation whether you like it or not.

The basic primitive nature of males is an actual hindrance to modern society; therefore now he has to constantly repress his sexuality, his anger, his urge to push and shove and fight, his competitiveness and all his primitive natures. There could be many reasons for that. Not willing to accept lower pay for one. Not willing to accept work that is “beneath” them like cleaning hotel rooms. The biggest reason may be that few companies are hiring in areas they are experienced in. Businesses are all sitting on their money, waiting for the economy to recover while everybody else either is not or cannot spend money to prime the pump. It’s a stalemate.

Again, I heard this over and over. Maybe the truth is that women are smarter and more disciplined than men. Or possibly, most women are not attracted to or capable of work that can be learned at a technical school.

Not so very long ago, really, and it took the women’s movement to force the men in charge to remedy this selfish oversight. Now the issue is research for children and medical equipment to use with children. Shows how we value our children – last. Guys get to go quick and before that long period of wretched frailty to suffer before death finally comes. Consider yourselves lucky!

Nobody is stopping them. I hear lots of talk about prostate cancer everywhere; why aren’t you hearing it? There’s less urgency with prostate cancer as it is a very slow-growing cancer, except in some rare cases, so it’s not the killer that other cancers are. Breast cancer can take a life rather quickly. There have been great strides made in certain kinds of breast cancer and all the research over the past 2 or 3 decades has resulted in lots of positive outcomes. Also when there is especially promising research, there is always a push to get funding for whatever disease it is that has such promising hope regardless of gender.

That may be because employers right now are looking to pay as little as possible and know they can keep women and minorities down with less trouble than keeping a man down; that goes for young people as well. Typically, women will accept less pay and be less demanding about promotions than a man will be. You could say the same thing about older clients even more so; ageism, regardless of gender, is rampant.

In other words, women work at work for pay and then at home for free so that all her hours are engaged in work, even overnight. If it’s not children, it’s care-giving for an elderly person or two. Not her choice, but the man won’t step up. The man works long hours for pay and then turns off; he’s done except for mowing the lawn on weekends. If he could be trusted to do what the woman does, the woman would be glad to work long hours. Men aren’t made for caring for small children and babies or for the multi-tasking with constant interruptions and changes to the day’s plan that raising children require. They generally don’t have the patience.

Women do all those things, too; nothing special. As to all the men who have accomplished great things, that’s a bit disingenuous. Women weren’t allowed to achieve until just recently and most achievement today is a team effort where no one person gets all the credit for the history books.

No sympathy for the white male from me; he’s finally in the right place here with all the rest of us. There are many important and good points in the rest of this post that I agree with.
These are excellent questions, ones that I have pondered for decades. In the broadest sense I have one theory. Human beings tend to resent those who are wealthy and to disdain those who are less than productive or weak. That's a primitive survival instinct for a social animal. The wealthy are taking more than their fair share which hurts the rest of the tribe. The weak and selfish are a burden that threatens the survival of the tribe. We are basically social animals. So both the very rich and the very poor are hated by all those in between. It takes strength and brains to get rich. The lack of these attributes get poverty.
Another theory of mine is that as humans (originally black) moved away from their origin in Tanzania, those who only did so to the west and to the east to the coast, where the climate was the same, were less innovative, less motivated and less adaptable than those who moved north and south where they had to figure out a differetnt way to survive in a new climate. Each migration further north and south required more brains and more effort, especially going on up into areas north of the Mediterranian Sea where cold and diminished sunlight became a serious challenge. Only those with white or light skin could physically survive there (due to vitamin D) so they became white.
Human migration diverged from just north of the Middle East due to this cold. Eastward migrations became Asians while western ones became Caucasians. The southern most migrations remained black since southern Africa stopped them. Those humans who migrated the furthest were those who were the smartest, most innovative, most motivated, most adventurous and most adaptable. The two "races" met on the other side of the world in America. The only reason Europeans were able to dominate the Native Americans was guns, germs and steel, the name of a book with this and other theories.
In American today we have the descendants of black slaves who were a selective lot. During slavery, white people very much feared insurection so laws were passed to disallow slaves from certain areas of Africa where they were smarter and more individually motivated. The preferred slaves were docile, immature, dim-witted and passive. Like children, they knew how to be dependent on their masters, but had to be "motivated" constantly to do what they were told to do. They accepted their lot as normal since the concept of bettering their situation didn't exist, the same as young children don't attempt to strike out on their own to get what they want. They only know that they have to go through the parent, so they find ways to please or trick the parent into giving them what they want. This is the American stock from which today's black population originated.
As we all know, some slaves were created from the parentage of a slave and a master. They were smarter, more mature and more individually motivated; they were house servants and overseers, but were worrisome, particularly the males. The descendants of these offspring were simply of higher quality.
So it seems to me that we have in America two types of black folks with a number in between, the many from the selected preferred "low-quality" slaves and a few from the mixed-race and those rare slaves who were from the southern most and northern most areas of Africa. That's my theory.
I will agree with you about one thing though ,you telling Mr Owusu to be careful what he hears and listens to because there seems to be allot of people who just say what they think rather than what they know . Mainly out of an arrogant elitists attitude and hubris ideology .

I have found a job, that starts Monday, but since it took me so long to find a job, I am out of money and food. I am looking for any kind of side work that I can do on Sunday, so that I can raise the money to get bus fair to my new job Monday morning and a weeks worth of groceries to last until I get my first pay check. I am willing to do any kind of work! It will cost me $3.20 a day to ride the bus, which comes to right around $15.00 and then maybe $20.00 worth of groceries at the dollar store. He was making the point that it was unfair for this country to make white people pay to support black people. I can only think that you may be misinterpreting my use of "low-information voter". Most of us are low-information these days due to the complete disappearance of real journalism. There is no source for reliable information out there. It takes excellent critical thinking and lots of effort to find out the truth in our society. I find it depressing and I give up sometimes, which makes me a low-information voter; it just takes too much effort. Then I'll try again to keep informed and try to sort out the truth versus the hype until I get tired again. We have no real way to know the truth without spending all our time night and day doing research. It shouldn't be this way and such is a major reason for the decline of America.

Other facts . Madison County never had one cotton plantation with slaves either according to the archives of the county. So what is it you really want to gripe about ? Could it be that those positions are in line with the demographics within the population. How many blacks verses whites actually live in the county. Should those positions be filled by people who are black or should they be filled by the people most qualified ? How many whites are on the Atlanta City Council ? What is the cost of tea in China ?
I myself have researched RootsWeb.com and have found no evidence that slavery ever existed here. I do put forth the challenge to SardonicVeracity or anyone else to put put fourth evidence to the contrary . I always welcome the truth based in sound fact. It only makes me a better person so I welcome it.

Alternately, check out some...most of the extant wills from the first half of the 19th century in MC. You will find many orders detailing what is to be done with the deceased's human property. Many of these are now online....so it will be easy for ya.

Not every white family from the South had a plantation nor did they all own slaves contrary to public opinion or whats taught in schools.
More than likely they were share croppers rather than slaves .

I, nor anyone else, has said that every white family owned slaves. Most did not. There were more than a few slaves in Madison County though. To deny that fact is farcical at best.
In 1860, blacks were not share croppers. That system of de facto slavery had not come into vogue and wouldn't for a few decades. Free blacks were hardly tolerated in Georgia.

Slavery in the upper part of the state differed dramatically from that in the southern and middle regions. It was a different type of institution with smaller farms and different crops and workforce sizes. The connection it has to the discussion at hand, I do not know. I merely wanted to address the mistaken historical fact....

I don't remember too many black folk on the ballot when I was voting there...just Michael Thurmond, and I always voted for him.
Perhaps that's because you only pay attention to and vote for Rs regardless of who the person beside the R is. Mr. Scott is an intelligent and concerned Madison County black man who had a D by his name on the last election ballot. I voted for him on the basis of his ideas. He did not win because most voters here just look for the Rs and cast their ballots. This is no way to install competent leaders. If you really did go vote and looked at all the names, you still wouldn't know that Mr. Scott is a black man since candidates are not labeled by race, gender, sexuality, nationality or age, height and weight. We shouldn't even have party affiliations in local elections, certainly not in the sheriff's race. Pay attention during the next elections; Mr. Scott may have an inclination to run again. I'll vote for him again.
While I'll admit that some of the older "HONKEYS here and Madison Co. may be Racist and will be UNTIL the day they die? I don't think Madison Co. as a whole is racist? I think if you are willing to work hard for what you got then you are an equal BUT if you are just looking for a hand out and special treatment just because of the color of your skin THEN YOU MY FRIEND ARE SORRY? And I know BOTH blacks and whites who are sorry and just looking for a free ride?
So, what information leads you to conclude that Mr. Scott would say or do anything in particular, much less what you propose in your statement above? Have you ever met this person? He's an amiable, reasonable and patient man with good ideas. He's more intelligent and refined than the majority of people in Madison County, both academically and common sense wise.

I, too, was/am frustrated with the lost opportunity in this county to finally elect a truly professional law enforcement person with clear ideas for improvement in the Madison County Sheriff's Department. I feel that Brennan Baird was overlooked by a largely low-information electorate here. Such is politics. I also feel that my law enforcement should not be in the hands of elected sheriffs; they should be hired and/or appointed by elected representatives and/or an overseeing board appointed by those representatives not unlike the new elections board here.
You sir want to keep the #$%^ stirred with your "racism" crap only because you can not even get your own people to back you up enough to get in an office ! If things were the other way around and it was more blacks doing everything you would not be calling it "racism" now would you ?
The best thing for you to do is keep your mouth shut or move to ATLANTA where your people run everything as you want !
I personally do not have a problem with black people as I have several as good friends but to have this "racism" crambed down my throat is uncalled for !

booing the National Anthem at a Sports events in San Antonio Texas. American Students being suspended for being racist because they chanted USA ,USA at another basketball event. We need to make commissioners pass a basic competency exam as part of the qualification process. I know if we did have such an exam, at least one of our commissioners would be out of a job. Maybe more.
There were many comments about blacks going to their country of origin. Do you know where black's country of origin, did your forefather/parents leave their address. If truth be told the only true Americans are Native Americans, every one else are just transplants. They probably are saying the same thing, we should go to our country of orign. Before we tell someone to go to their home of origin, we need to first go ourselves. Mr. Scott is garanteed the freedom of speech, if we do not want to read his comments, maybe we should move. Before we start throwing out negative remarks about Mr. Scott's comments; we need to reread it. Mr. Scott stated he refused to call it racism, so where are we getting the racism from. He like me, is asking where are the brown people? Madison County have blacks, Asians, hispanics and other races. Can we all get along!

SO I agree with you if football is the reason they have their kids at Madison Co. the parents had better pray the kids are learning something in class because they sure ain't learning much on the football field?
We are talking because one man decided to make a statement based on what he sees in our county government. That is not to say the observation he made is true or false. He only asked a question, a question I hope is false.
Our children are in school for one reason only, to get an education. Sport is extra. We must not cause injustice to our children by pulling them out of the school system here in Madison County. Because we as adults can not get alone certainly does not mean our children don't get along. In fact if we thought more like little children, there would not be racism. This is an emotion that was taught/learned as children, by all races. I am not saying every one is a racist but like a bad apple in a barrel, if you do not take it out, the whole barrel will go bad.
