The City of Danielsville will shine a little brighter in the coming months with the addition of 25 new streetlights.
The council voted March 11 to approve an agreement with Georgia Power to revamp the city’s existing lights and add 25 more throughout the town.
Since two council members, mayor Todd Higdon and councilman Jon Hendrix, live in Long Estates where five of the new lights will be located, they recused themselves from the vote. The remaining three council members voted unanimously to add the lights. Mayor pro tem Tim Stamps said he feels the extra lighting will make the city feel safer.
Higdon explained that the city and Georgia Power had taken an inventory of existing lights and their current wattage, finding lights that had the incorrect wattage for the area and other areas that needed lights added.
For example, Higdon pointed out that the old jail building, located behind city hall, still has a 400-watt bulb in it and that that light alone costs the city $48 per month. Higdon said 34 lights, including that one, would be changed to standard 100-watt bulbs, which would save enough in energy to add the 25 new lights. There will be an installation fee of $3,635, which Higdon pointed out can be offset by the city’s first franchise check from Windstream Communications.

Why does Mayor Higdon get five street lights in Long Estates? That is a private development. Why is public money being spent on the neighborhood that Todd built and profited from? Public money spent on private development! Does not seem proper even if the mayor did recuse himself.

"REALLY" how do you think lights got in North Ridge development. I remember years ago this coming up in the Madison county journal may have even been front page, About contractor providing power outlets and city providing lights, I think there was a deal made then but never implemented. Here's a shocker, people pay taxes and deserve public services for there money (even those that live in a subdivision). AGAIN As it reads above its about the safety for all of us, not about the mayor, Thanks Mayor Higdon, An to all involved for trying to keep us safe, keep up the good work!!!

The city agreed to put the lights in BEFORE the neighborhood was built.Todd paid to have the wiring and mount points installed himself. He just didn't push it because of the financial concerns the city was fighting at the time. Those concerns have been rectified.

It's always nice to have the real truth when commenters get ugly and personal. Mayor Higdon is the best thing to happen to Danielsville in a long, long time.

I hope the mayor gets a public light over his pool. He really needs one, it will help on those dark nights. :)
