Madison and Elbert County leaders are seeking a water-line connection between the two counties and are hoping the state will foot the bill.
The Madison County Industrial Development and Building Authority agreed Monday to join Elbert County in seeking a preliminary engineering summary for a water line connection between the two counties on Hwy. 72. The counties are seeking approval of the connection through the Governor’s Water Supply Program, which is intended to establish regional water connections.
A line between Elbert and Madison counties would supply the county with water from Lake Russell. The line could eventually run to Athens, which will likely seek new water sources in years to come. Madison County IDA members have worked to link the county with surrounding counties to the east, west and north, saying that a growing county can’t rely on well water in years to come and will need water from elsewhere. Likewise, a Madison County system that draws water from elsewhere could eventually serve as a feeder system into Athens with Madison County charging its neighbors to the south for the service.
