Bennie Tuggle, of Colbert, says he was surprised when he received the news that he’d been named Grand Marshal for this year’s Colbert July 4th parade.
He shouldn’t have been.
After all, Tuggle has figured prominently in the organization of the yearly event for many years. As president of the Colbert Lions Club for most of the last decade, Tuggle has worked closely with his fellow Lions Club members, town officials and other volunteers to pull off one of the biggest annual Madison County celebrations on one of the traditionally hottest days of the year.
“The mayor (Max Peck) said it was a done deal,” he said of receiving the news. “(There was) nothing I could say, except thank you and it’s an honor to be chosen.”
And besides riding at the head of the parade this year, the army veteran will also be on hand as usual to help serve up those Lions Club hamburgers and hot dogs, another July 4th tradition.
Tuggle joined the Lions Club soon after he and his wife, Barbara, moved to Colbert from Athens in January 1995.
