Former deputy charged with sending obscene material to minor

A former Madison County deputy has been charged with electronically furnishing obscene material to a minor.

Jeffery Dale Roberts, 37, 60 East Ninth Street, Colbert, was fired from his job after the sheriff’s department learned of the man’s alleged inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old girl.

Sheriff Clayton Lowe said the girl’s parents presented copies of “inappropriate e-mails” sent to the teen from deputy Roberts.

Lowe said Roberts left a message on the girl’s MySpace page instructing her to visit her Yahoo account for an e-mail from him. The girl’s mother reportedly intercepted the message and went to the e-mail account, where she found a number of e-mails from Roberts. Copies of these e-mails were given to Lowe.

“There were pages and pages of (messages) and many were sexually explicit,” Lowe said, some encouraging the girl to meet with him.

Lowe said the law states that it is illegal for someone to send sexually explicit e-mails to a person under 18 who is not their spouse.

Choices have consequences but wonder why this case has a photo printed and Dills, Spence & Chambers don't.
All were processed/photoed, all are accused.
Give the justice system a chance in court
instead of a scarlet letter in the Journal.

This was not a one way road, this young girl knew what she was doing also. I completely agree that Jeff did wrong.But so did this girl.I am sorry but children at sixteen know
the difference between right and wrong.

Why is her name not being plastered all over the paper? Why is she not facing any repercussion for what she did . As parent it is our responible to keep are children safe, Where were the parents? I pray for all that have been affected by this.

The girl was 16...she is a child. The man is 37 years old. 37 YEARS OLD! And a police officer. Children are taught to trust police officers. This creep completely violated and took advantage of that trust. I'm just thankful this came to light in the "sending dirty emails" phase as it could have ended in tragedy for this child and her family. As it is, this child has been scarred for life.

According to the Journal the girl’s mother reportedly intercepted the message and went to the e-mail account, So I assume that this girl hide this from her parents. So this girl knew what she was doing was wrong, so why is Jeff the only suffering repercussion from this. She clearly knew she was in the wrong also.

He is a grown man with a family AND a police officer that took a oath. He should of not placed himself in that position. We are all human but do not put yourself in positions that something could happen. I feel for his wife, family and children because they have to live with this too.
Again, Jeff is human and so is the girl, but he is old enough to know better than to cheat on his wife and much less with a 16 year that should be considered "jail bait" as they said in my day.

I am the parent of the 16 year old MINOR. I would like to
respond to somethings written. First, my daughter trusted
Jeff, second, Jeff has a son older than her and should know
she was to young regardless of cheating or not on his wife.
Also, she has had that email address for ever because her
grandmoter lives out of state. I too feel very sorry for all
involved in this, including Colbert commnity. But somethings
you should just know better. My child is that a 16 yr old
child and to all those that say she knew better, let some
older guy try to do this to your child. Then let me know where
you place the blame.????? Thanks to all those that have
sympathy for both families. And please don't be so mean.
We have to now learn how to pick up the pieces and move on.

I agree what Jeff did was wrong but we are all human and we all make mistakes, we ALL SIN !! I know jeff personally and I know how much he is sorry for what he has happened I to feel for his family and all those that are suffering because of this. We are so quick to pass judgement but this is a personal matter and is trully between Jeff and God !! I pray everyday that he and his family will get through this and I know him well enough to know he will come out of this a better man for it !! Everyone should drop down on their knees and pray for all parties involved and the paper and media need to let this die so these families cant start to mend !!
