An 18-year-old Athens man was charged with homicide by vehicle after a Saturday accident on Garnett Ward Road that claimed the life of a back-seat passenger in his car.
Edwin Juarez-Alpizar also faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to report an accident, weaving over the roadway, driving while license withdrawn and furnishing, purchasing or possession of alcoholic beverages by a person below the legal age.
According to a report from the Athens post of the Georgia State Patrol, Danny Ceniceros, 31, died when the vehicle he was traveling in as a backseat passenger, overturned and struck a tree at 4:20 p.m., Saturday.
The vehicle was traveling north on Garnett Ward Road when Juarez-Alpizar failed to maintain his lane and traveled onto the east roadside. The vehicle began to rotate, then struck a sign and a tree with its right side. After initial impact, the vehicle began to overturn onto its right side, before striking a large tree. The vehicle came to rest on its right side facing west. Ceniceros was pronounced dead at the scene.
Juarez-Alpizar’s bond is listed as $22,100 on the Madison County Sheriff’s Office website.
