A Hartwell man was arrested recently after he allegedly tried to trade Lortabs for lottery tickets at a convenience store.
Cameron Keith Chatham, 22, was charged with one count of possession of a Schedule III controlled substance.
According to the report, officer William Elrod was dispatched to the Golden Pantry on Hwy. 72 West.
Elrod entered the store and observed a white male at the counter scratching off lottery tickets. The clerk identified him as the one he had called in about. Elrod followed the subject outside the store where he made contact with him. He requested to see an I.D. and was told he didn’t have one. Elrod asked if he had a valid license and he replied “yes.” Chatham identified himself and it was determined that his license was suspended.
When Elrod asked Chatham if he’d been attempting to trade Lortabs for lottery tickets, he stated no, that he didn’t do or have any Lortabs, that he went to the Methadone clinic. Elrod did a cursory pat down of Chatham for officer safety, and requested his consent to search the vehicle. Chatham refused. In the driver’s seat in plain view was an amber medication bottle containing white oblong pills without a label. Elrod told Chatham that the pills were in plain view and retrieved them from the seat.
Chatham was placed under arrest at that time and transported to Madison County Jail.
