The 11 volunteer fire departments in Madison County will hold a boot drive fund-raiser Nov. 9 for the two firefighters injured in an accident while fighting a fire in Comer Oct. 18.
The boot drive will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at all major intersections in the county.
“These are volunteer firefighters,” said boot drive organizers. “We do not have paid firefighters in Madison County and they risk being seriously injured while volunteering to protect lives and property. One of these firefighters is now unable to work at his full-time employment as a result of his injuries. The volunteer fire departments of Madison County ask that you consider contributing to this worthy cause.”
Charlie Burroughs, a Comer VFD firefighter, and Randy Wilson, a Danielsville VFD firefighter, were injured when they responded to a tire fire on the trailer of a semi-truck. The tire exploded and caused serious injuries to both firefighters. Both firefighters will require more surgeries to treat their injuries.
Those unable to participate in the boot drive can contribute to bank accounts opened this week at First Citizens Bank, BB&T Bank, and First Madison Bank. Checks can be made payable to the Madison County Volunteer Firefighters Association — Injured Firefighters Benefit Fund.
