An Athens woman was arrested on drug charges recently during a traffic stop after her ex-husband called to report that she had drugs in her car.
Rebecca Emily Dean, 37, was charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, DUI/drugs, weaving over roadway and head/tail light requirements.
While on patrol, officer Chris Haston noticed a tan four-door car turn onto Hwy. 98 East from private driveway without any taillights. As he followed the vehicle looking for a safe place to make a traffic stop, he noticed car crossing the fog line and ride partially on the grass for a short distance.
Haston stopped the vehicle as it turned onto Fortson Compton Road, where it came to a stop. The driver (Dean), said she didn’t know her taillights were out but that her and her husband got into a fight the day before and he “tore her car up.”
When Haston called dispatch, they told him that Dean’s ex-husband had called, telling them Dean had just left his house and had offered him drugs. He said the drugs were located in a cigarette pack. Dean then gave consent for her vehicle to be searched and the cigarette pack, which contained a white powdery substance was located in the driver side door which tested positive for cocaine.
In another incident, a Comer man was charged with family violence last week after a domestic dispute on Della Slaton Road.
Kenneth Potts, 47, was charged with one count of battery FVA.
According to the incident report, officer Chris Haston went to the residence where he met with a woman who told him that her and her children’s father (Potts) got into an altercation after he came home and asked her why supper was not ready. She told him there was no food to cook. He allegedly called her names and then packed a bag to leave. During the altercation he allegedly hit her in the head, leaving a mark. He and the youngest child then left on foot.
