A Comer man was arrested recently after an officer tried to stop him for speeding.
Jonathan Michael Patton, 28, Comer, was charged with DUI/drugs, defective tires, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude and speeding.
According to the incident report, officer Jeff Strickland was traveling south on Paoli Road when he saw a blue Ford Explorer going north at a high rate of speed. When Strickland attempted to stop the Explorer, the driver (Patton) sped up and turned onto Pine Valley Farm Road, continuing to speed and to drive recklessly. Patton eventually stopped in the middle of New Hope Church Road and got out of the SUV. After telling Patton multiple times to get on the ground, Strickland tackled him.
He asked Patton why he was fleeing and Patton said he was afraid and did not want another ticket. He admitted to taking Xanax earlier in the day. Narcotics and drug paraphernalia were found in the Explorer. Patton was taken to jail.
In another arrest, a Commerce couple was arrested last week on family violence charges.
Edward Kim Sargent, 47, and Martha Sue Weir Sargent, both of Commerce, were each charged with one count of simple battery FVA.
According to the incident report, officer Jason Ring and officer Kyle Roberts were sent to a home on Short Seagraves Road Friday, where they met with Mrs. Sargent, who was sitting out in front of the home on a wood fence. She said she and her husband were having problems and that they got into a pushing match after she came out and found him “messing with the motor” of her car to keep her from leaving. Mr. Sargent, who was inside, said his wife hit him on the head with something while they were inside the home. The top of his head was red and swollen, according to the report. He denied shoving or touching his wife during the fight. Both were taken to jail.
