Madison County leaders plan to expand the county jail by 32 beds and to have the expansion completed in 2015. So leaders are working now to get that project rolling.
The Madison County Jail Committee met recently and submitted recommendations for three potential design-build teams for the project. They include 1.) Hogan/Pond; 2.) New South/Wakefield Beasley; and 3.) R.W. Allen/Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart and Stewart.
According to the recommendation to the BOC, the three firms “all have substantial experience with jail design and construction.”
Madison County citizens approved $3.3 million in the 2008 special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) to expand the county jail. The current facility is 64 beds.

I am not opposing the expansion if the space is needed but are we actually helping the core of the problem? What can we do as a whole to prevent these people from making bad choices that require them to be housed in a jail. I know we can't save the world but that has to be a smarter solution than just building expensive buildings to house criminals.
