The Hull City Council has set its sights on making some much-needed road improvements around the city.
“We have a bid for road improvements that we receive back in July, but have had to put off the issue ever since then,” said Councilman Wayne Melton. “We have major problems with Pope Miller, Glen Carrie, Yarborough, and Old Elberton Road washing out, and need to get those fixed.”
He said the city needs to go ahead and use its special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) money.
“We have money in the SPLOST fund to take care of the improvements now, but if we don’t use it by the deadline we forfeit the funds and have to send them back to the county,” he said. “So my suggestion is to pave everything in the city before we lose the money.”
Mayor Mike Jones inquired about the bidding process.
“Do we get to pick who does it or do we have to take bids for this job?” he asked.
Melton talked about the selection process to the council.
“We can actually just decide who we want to use anyway, and don’t necessarily have to ask for bids,” he said. “Taking bids is just the preferred way of doing it.”
Mayor Jones voiced his concerns on the issue.
“Alright, well I personally think we need to take care of our roads,” said Jones. “But I don’t want to take care of anything that’s not actually in the city, because it’s an election year and I’m sure the county is going to take care of their roads.”
Melton offered final thoughts on the matter.
“We need to figure out who we’re going to get to do the job, so from this point I suggest we get some estimates and go from there.”
In other matters, the surveying and staking of pins was tabled until December 2014. The Hull Volunteer Fire Department purchased a new cascade system, but is still in the process of replacing other types of equipment, which will soon expire.
Ed Coile Road needs to be on the list BAD!!!! There is a hole the size of a small sink hole just before you get to where you pull out on to Hwy 29 and there is many more holes in this area of the road. It has been this way for at least 5 YEARS!!!!
