A home on Hwy. 29 North across from Irwin Kirk Road was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon, March 6, after a 4-year old playing with matches allegedly set a mattress on fire in a bedroom.
Officer Kyle Roberts was dispatched to the scene, along with Danielsville, Ila and Shiloh volunteer fire departments.
According to the incident report, there were seven people inside the home when the fire began, out of a total of nine people who lived there.
An adult at home at the time of the fire said she went into her son’s room where she found him playing with matches and saw the mattress burst into flames. She told Roberts that she has had problems with him playing with matches and have taken them away from him on several occasions.
She said she grabbed up her son and the other children and ran with them outside. The report stated that approximately 80 percent of the outside of the brick home was destroyed, with the inside completely destroyed. A Chevrolet HHR vehicle sitting under the carport at the time of the fire was also destroyed by fire.
The woman was taken by EMS to a local hospital for treatment of burns on her hand, but there were no other injuries reported. The Red Cross was notified. Several firearms, along with a tablet were recovered and turned over to the owner of the residence.
Other fires reported around the county last week included:
•A chimney fire was reported on Lem Edwards Road.
•A fire destroyed a home at 301 Faye Carey Road last week. The Red Cross was called to assist the single male homeowner, who was not injured, according to the report.
