Colbert officials have heard complaints from residents about dirty water and they’re trying to do something about it.
“We’ve opened up two valves that connect us to the county water supply, so they’re now supplying the vast majority of our water,” said Mayor Chris Peck Monday. “Our hope is that getting the supply of water from the county’s tower on Hwy. 72 will allow us to keep our tank full, which will in turn keep our lines full and flush out what’s currently in there.”
Peck said that the city will also ask Piedmont Water Company to clean out the line.
“Once we’ve got everything stabilized, we’re going to reach out to Piedmont and request that they do some zoned pipe flushing to get some of this further cleaned out,” said Peck.
Ellyn Trinrud inquired about additional treatment ideas.
“When the council puts in the request to Piedmont, would it be possible to also get some information about other things that they could provide other than just running more water through the lines?” she asked.
Peck said the city could “certainly consider it.”
“For right now though, our primary concern is to get the supply of water in the pipes stabilized so that we’re not having to continuously turn valves on an off and shake the system,” said Peck.
Councilwoman Evelyn Power questioned why there are water issues.
“What is it that continues to cause the problem?” she asked.
Peck the primary problem has been the “lack of water supply that we’ve had in the pipes to flush them out.”
“The other day we thought we had it cleared up, but when the fire department had to hook up to the lines to put out a fire it shook the whole system and stirred everything back up in the pipes,” he said.
Peck offer final thoughts on the matter.
“I can already see a difference in the water the past couple of days compared to the water we’ve had the past several weeks,” he said. “We are working on it and we’re doing our best to get it fixed, but that’s where we’re currently at on the water situation.”
In other matters, the county engineer is drawing up plans for a possible solution to slow drivers down and keep them in their correct lanes as they enter onto 4th street. Also, there will be no July meeting due to activities for the Fourth of July.
