“Trick or treat so others can eat” is the theme they chose. But, instead of going door to door for candy, they go door-to-door and request items for the food bank. The response has been 100 percent positive at every house we’ve ever stopped. People are happy to search their cupboards and give when it’s made that easy. More often than not, the students are thanked by those putting cans of food into the kid’s bags. The students still get to enjoy “trick or treating” as teenagers, and they get to experience the joy of such a meaningful project. These great kids have gathered about 300 lbs. of canned goods each year and had a blast doing it.
Perhaps other youth groups and clubs would consider doing something similar as well. Maybe your own children would be happy to “trick or treat so others can eat.” Or, maybe they’ll come up with their own ideas to celebrate the bounty of the harvest time in our community by collecting food for those who are hungry. There are so many good ways to help the Madison County Food Bank, and now is the time.
Fall is the traditional season of the harvest celebrations. This year some people are down a bit because of the economy. Charitable giving is also down. But nothing raises us up as a people like doing for others. Let’s do what we can to chase away the ghosts and specter of hunger in our community. Hunger is scary. Too scary. It is a good time to put on your cape and a funny hat and do something positive about it.
Sincerely,
Chris Young
