A Danielsville man was apprehended Thursday evening after a day-long manhunt. Towns Frederick Roberts was arrested for allegedly stealing firearms from Madison County Sheriff Clayton Lowe’s car and for the burglary of a Danielsville beauty shop.
Roberts, 23, was charged by the sheriff’s office with theft by receiving stolen property and three counts of burglary by the Danielsville Police Department.
He is being held in the Madison County Jail without bond.
According to Captain Mike Benner, Roberts came to the scene of a Wednesday night wreck on Hwy. 98 West near Old Gin Road just outside Danielsville that involved Madison County investigator Amory “Buck” Scoggins and a female relative of Roberts.
Benner said the woman pulled into the path of Scoggins’ vehicle. She received minor injuries and Roberts apparently came to the scene to check on her.
Scoggins was seriously injured, receiving a broken wrist and fractured pelvis. Benner said Friday that Scoggins will have to undergo hip replacement surgery.
While Benner, Sheriff Lowe and other officers were at the scene of the accident, Roberts apparently observed Lowe removing firearms from Scoggins’ damaged vehicle and placing them into his vehicle.
Lowe and Benner followed the ambulance to Athens Regional Hospital, where they remained with Scoggins until after 2 a.m.
When Lowe returned to his patrol car, he noticed that the center armrest of his vehicle was up, but thought he must have left it that way. On his way home, he noticed that his service revolver was missing, along with other firearms and several other items.
According to an Athens-Clarke County Police report, Lowe told the responding officer, who met him in the parking lot of Central Baptist Church on Danielsville Road, that his vehicle had been broken into at the hospital.
Roberts is also believed to have burglarized Hairmasters Beauty Salon on Grady Avenue in Danielsville later that morning.
Benner said all the weapons, along with other stolen items were recovered at a Danielsville home Thursday after Danielsville Police received a tip.
The informant also told officers that Roberts had visited a relative’s home north of Danielsville. Using this information, deputies launched a day-long manhunt, including an air search by a helicopter.
Roberts was eventually tracked to a car driven by his girlfriend, Donyelle Childers, 25, of a Danielsville address.
Roberts and Childers were taken into custody by Sheriff Lowe Thursday around 5:30 p.m. after Lowe spotted the vehicle, driven by Childers, traveling on Crawford W. Long Street in Danielsville. Lowe pulled the vehicle over and took both suspects into custody without incident. Two small children were also in the vehicle.
Childers has been charged on one count of felony hindering the apprehension of a criminal.
It seems that firearms are as secure with the Sherrif of Madison County as cash is with other government entities.
On a side note, that Roberts fellow does look pleased in his mugshot. I will forgo the easy comment about the ears.
How do you get, from the story, that the car was secured? From the facts related therin, the weapons were in a console between the seats and the doors were unlocked. The theft wasn't discovered, even after finding the console open, until it dawned on him to check, until miles away from the scene of the crime.
Despite your obvious veneration of beloved Sherrif Lowe, if you gave somme thought to the story you would have to come to the same conclusion I did: He deserves a reprimand. Kudos to him for bringing the big eared theif to justice.
What if he hadn't been lucky enough to have been robbed by a moron (this was a dumb crime...by an obviously stupid person) and the crook with the exceptional hearing had used one of those guns in a subsequent crime? Say to rob your mother at gunpoint...
I do not care who is the next sherriff of Madison County. You obviously do. I was merely pointing out something that seemed like a fairly big mistake for the chief law enforcement officer to make.
Lastly, let me know where I can get slim jims for a dime a dozen. I'll take a gross! Those meat snacks are mighty tasty.
Sheriff Department put his man behind bars before he committed another crime. Looks
Like he has been on a rampage according to the other counties he is wanted in. Sheriff Lowe and his staff do a great job getting these criminals off out streets and I wish to Thank Him as well as his staff.
I bet his mama is proud.
You have to wonder sometime if these people arent doing this stuff for their 5 minutes of fame.
Like the old saying goes " A locked door only keeps a honest man honest" If a crook wants in your car or house locking the door does no good.If he wants in he will get in.
A quick comment about Mr. Roberts: with ears like them he should have been able to hear the law coming and run the other way.
With ears like that he could run for President of the United States!
... at least on the Democratic ticket.
Uh, he doesn't look anything like Obama. Obama is black; this clown is white, just like W
