As of 10:10 p.m., with all precincts reporting. These are the final figures for Tuesday. There are about a dozen provisional ballots that will be reviewed Wednesday, but none of these elections remain in dispute.

That is so true... he has been one of the only board members to be truthful in how he votes... as far as I know he has never said he would vote one way then turn around and vote another... a true voice of reason on a board that at times hasnt shown much reason... he goes by the law first then takes into consideration what the people want, majority rule... no ifs ands or "butts" about it!!!

number one the boc do not check the deposits... that is not their job... number 2 they are elected officials and are not expected to pay for their own legal fees when frivolous law suits are formed against them... Patsy Pierce, Ken, Jack Fortson, Stanley Thomas... all their legal fees were paid by the county too... if you worked for someone and someone sues you for doing your job do you think it would be fair that the company you work for would make you pay your own legal fees... please... every commissioner is covered under that policy not just one... make sure you research your info and dont just listen to what people tell you.. check it out its true...

The person or persons that are responsible for checking the county deposit would be the county clerk and the finance director. Still confused why these two did not catch on to what was going on. Maybe their hands are dirty also. So if you must pass blame, blame these TWO.

The legal fees that he took on his own time. It is well over 100,000 dollars. We aren't talking about what you are talking about you need to check it out. This has nothing to do with the county. Check it out it is public knowledge.

Did you call and ask him and get his side of the story???? His personal phone number is listed in the book... did you talk to him??? Did you bother to call or just listen to all the rumors you heard from people who are disgruntled because he would vote the way they wanted him to because it went against what he stood for... take your own advise and ask him yourself... I think you will be surprised how transparent this man really is... Thank you Bruce for the job you do for us... You are loved among many!!!

Kip is a great guy. He was recommended by all my friends on the sheriff department in Oconee County, where he is currently a deputy. I met him personally. He is the only one who campaigned to me and we talked for about half an hour. Very professional and polite guy. I was proud to vote for him. Another plus: He is Republican. I cannot bring myself to vote for ANYONE who is associated with the same party as Barack Hussein Obama!

I would really like to let everyone who voted against Clayton Lowe for sheriff what a mistake they have made. Sheriff Lowe is a honest, good, hard working man, he's always on call for the sheriff's department and he took his position with pride and really did great work in the county. God in heaven only knows what we're up for now.

The poles have been closed for over 1 hr and 10 min. I would have thought we would see some results at this point in time. Perhaps someone is out for dinner or this web page is somewhat antiquated.

the paper can only post when precincts report. Anything less and it'd be fiction. Better question is: why is it taking so long for precincts to report results?

Anyway, it's nice the paper people are working late on this neat instant results gizmo. Remember not so long ago (like a few months) we had to wait until the morning? :)

To the Madison County Journal, it was a little slow getting started. But you are doing a great job tonight. This is light years from where the Journal was only a few short years ago. I have gotten your paper since Frank started it so many years ago. And you continue to do and outstanding job. Thanks again for our county having a great local paper with an excellent web page.

Clayton Lowe is a good Sheriff and just because the county thinks we need a change is not a reason to elect Kip Thomas. Sheriff Lowe has worked very hard in the years he has been in office. Some people don`t like it because he did what he should have done and put them in jail. I am sure being in office this long he has a lot of enemies.

It is not hip hip for Madison County it is a sad day.

I do however think he will be a good sheriff. Deputies have to go through 10-11 weeks at the police academy as well as ongoing training through their career. Nobody knows really knows what a deputy has to go through on their jobs. If you had to do this, you wouldn't call deputies flunkees.

If I were you I would check into why his brother Kevin got fired. There are legitimate reasons Clayton is a good, fair and honest man. I guess he's locked up you or your relatives for you to have this attitude. Yeah great job ONLY 55% of the county approves of the job you are doing and 45% do not. Hopefully, you will try to do a better job since we have you for 4 more years. Oh yeah, I guess a tax sell in January will be too little to late because the economy is horrible and banks are not lending money so easily now day. So who will buy the houses?

May the real tax payers be prepared to pay higher taxes to cover the ones that do not pay their taxes.

Rebecca, I agree. I don't personally know Kip and I did not personally know Clayton. I voted for Clayton because of the great job he did cleaning up this county. Now I'll give Kip a chance.
Bad mouthing the man before we see what he can do is not fair. I hope Clayton Lowe and Kip Thomas keeps an open dialogue and Clayton helps Kip and Kip accepts the help.
My main thing is animal and child abuse and as long as Kip keeps the critters and kids safe I won't have a problem with him.

Obama: landslide.
Obama: much, much larger margin of victory than Bush in 2004, or Bush in 2000. Actually, largest margin of victory by any candidate since Reagan in 84...equals: MANDATE. Something W never had.

I'm so proud of the American people! I took today off to celebrate. Remember this time everyone...today is as historic as George Washington being the first President...now we have the first African American President!

Wow, Kip has a bunch of you in Madison Co. fooled. He made one drug arrest in almost nine years working for the Madison Co. Sheriff's Office, and now he is suppose to be an almighty drug enforcment agent. He sure made no effort to combat the drug problem when he worked there before, nor anything else for that matter. It's public record people, go to the Sheriff's Office or the DA office and check for yourself. Better yet, I bet the Oconee Co. Sheriff's Office could show you some staggering drug arrest data as well. Oh well, half of you picked him but unfortunately all of us will suffer.
If Sheriff Lowe was not the honest and decent man that he is, then he could have easily brought this information out during his campaign. However, he is not one to run a dirty campaign or get into a mudslinging contest with his opponent. I'm sure Madison Co. will now have to build at least a 300 bed jail to accomadate all of Kip's drug arrest that he is going to make. What a joke!

Hey everyone! Kip didn't pay me a penny for my vote. I work in law enforcement and, have dealt with Lowe's "good ole boy" mentality for the past 7 years. The choice was easy. You really to take a lesson in maturity. I've had the pleasure of working for Sheriff Lowe and working with Sheriff Elect Thomas before entering the EMS field. They both are great guys witha great work ethic. They both have and will continue to do a great job for this county. Kip did not buy my vote and for you to make claims like this just goes to show you have no class, no maturity, no social experience and that you act like a three year old throwing a fit in Walmart.

Do you even know Kip? Or did Kip arrest a family member or possibly even you?

It may take Kip a year or so to work out the wrinkles that comes with the new territory of this type of office. Give him a chance and stop acting like a three year old. If you don't like the job he has done in four years voice it with your vote. Before that time if you don't like the way he runs his department, tell him about it. Sit down with him and let him know your concerns like an adult.

It is so easy for any of us to sit here and trash Kip for a job that he hasnt even started or Clayton for a job that he has spent endless hours in the past years doing and yet there isnt a single one of us that knows what it takes to go out there day in and day out to protect and give what either of these men have given and will give in the future. Instead of sitting here bad mouthing either of them, why dont you take the energy that you are wasting and try to find out what YOU can do to help make your county a better place to live or yet a better place for your children to grow up in. Look around people. You ask why we have all the crap in the county that we have? Read some of the crap in this blog. Do you think the teens in this county dont read this? It starts with us, the adults. You are entitled to your opinions, this is true, but try to have a little more respect with your opinion. Do I think Clayton was always right, no. Do I think Kip will always be, absolutely not. Why you ask? BECAUSE WE ARE ALL HUMAN. We will all make mistakes. Do your part, stop the trashing and start helping Madison County become a better place.

These posting just shows how childness some people are in this county. All you Kip basher do you think Lowe would agree with you. Heck NO ! I agree with you Sheriff Lowe is a good and honest man and should have been reelected, however the people in this county have spoken so we now have to deal with it.

We currently have the best sheriff in North Georgia. We will soon lose him. He has made good common sense decisions and has been fair to all involved. He has appeared on the Atlanta news several times and represented our county well. I hope you realize what we have lost.

Maybe we should just ask Kip how many drug dealers he got off the streets when he was a deputy in Madison County. What a joke that is!! It looks like to me if he was so concerned about the major drug problem our county has he would have locked some up then. Surely if he was such a drug go getter somebody would remember all these dealers he got off our streets from Madison County's past experience with him!! Nobody does because he was to dang LAZY to get out of the patrol car and lock anyone up!! Because he is worthless!!!! That's alright because the citizens of this county that put him in office will soon find out what he is all about and it want be what your expecting from all those big lies he put in the paper each week! You all got what you deserve!!! And Ms. Smith I do know Kip but that doesn't change my thoughts on him at all! And he doesn't deserve a chance!

personally, i believe we should just all sit back because the new sheriff will not last, sheriff lowe did a great job for this county and i can assure you that if he runs for sheriff again after thomas's 4 year term, he will become sheriff again. i am sure kip went broke getting all these votes(or better yet his family that pretends to have all this money, there such a show!!!!), i am sure he will have his brother and father, also father-in-law running the county so i am sure our county is in for a mess just like our country is in for a mess with the new president. also if you read further comments, oconnee county is glad to loss the arrogant deputy and warns us in what we are up against, seems to me with all the degrading thomas did and his father and father- in-law against sheriff lowe, that would be a wake up call for all voters in the county, is he a grown man that can handle being a sheriff for our county? his family sure had to do alot of mouthing to turn voters his way. that is so sad. wake up kip supporters!!!!!!!!!!!

This Sheriff’s election has strengthened my fear that we are too selfish and too ignorant to capably elect our own leaders. We momentarily appreciate only that which directly benefits us - Not decisions and actions that are for the common good. We are a bloodthirsty pack of wolves, eager to believe any and all negative rumor and innuendo without regard for truth and fairness. We deserve what we get.

Sheriff Lowe, there is a great number who appreciate your efforts, your leadership and your sacrifices over the last 12 years. My prayer is that you will not be discouraged by this display of human ignorance and ingratitude, but rather will look much higher for confirmation that you “Did Good.” I pray that you will return to Madison County public service. A wise man said “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” You’re a good man that we need, despite the fact that we don’t deserve you.

Mr. Thomas and Madison County, may God be with us.

WHOA, everybody. I feel sure that Sheriff Lowe is grateful for your support, but I also am certain that he wouldn't condone the bashing going on here. Remember, he is a good and decent man... and the things you're saying here aren't really worthy of his supporters.

We've gotta get thru the next four years, so the best thing to do is try to pull together in a POSITIVE way.

And then go out and campaign for Clayton in 2012. I will.

I completely agree with you. I do not think Clayton would appreciate the slander on this board. Maybe Clayton could come out and give his support to Mr. Thomas and it would make everyone feel better.
Why worry about things that you can't change.
I voted for McCain but I am supporting Obama, why? The majority spoke and he is our president and Mr.Thomas is our sheriff.

In my opinion, respect is the most important attribute for a Sheriff. It is quite apparent from these comments that Clayton Lowe had earned respect from many people and maintained it over a 12 year period. Not an easy thing to do. I do not know Kip Thomas, but he has 4 years to earn respect from the county. I would suggest he start today.

Some of the folks on these post are flat out small people. You small minded, childish people have no facts or statistics to back up anything you say or post.

"Worried Citizen", where are your facts coming from? Did you call 911 for something and it didn't go the way you wanted it to? Is this what your childish rant is all about?

You rant and complain about someone who hasn't even taken office? If you have a problem with someone's in-laws or family itself you should take that up with the family and not sit on this board posting anonymous crap.

You take your anonymity with a little too much pride. Where will this anonymity be when you call for a deputy in January? I'll tell you, it will be packed away in your computer where you can remain nameless and faceless like a coward.

If you have a problem with the way your fellow citizens vote, you should have encouraged more people to vote. There were thousands of Madison County registered voters who sat at home on Tuesday. Do not sit on this board blaming an individual who took the initiative to run for office when you sit at home complaining in anonymity.

Ask the deputy that was fired for voting for Kip!

I would like to know who made you spokesperson of the month? I really don't think you have the right to call anyone on this list small minded. I do post my name and I am not ashamed to say I voted for Clayton Lowe and he is many times more the man than kip can every try to be. Why don't you check the sheriff's dept and see how many deputies and 911 employees he has already fired. If you will note when Clayton took office he didn't go in and clean house by firing deputies, he realized these are people in the community who work daily to keep us safe and that they have families. Clayton is a good fair man and if you didn't appreciate that while he was Sheriff you will when kip becomes sheriff.

The recount is coming. It may not change a thing, but it will be done. I don't think that the people were dissatisfied with the job that Clayton has done for the last 12 years. I agree with SadMadisonCoVoter that this is a result of human ignorance and ingratitude. I pray that Clayton will return to the Madison County public service as well. My thoughts and prayers are with himm and his family. Clayton, hold your head high because you made us all proud and served our county well!

If everyone is so unhappy with the new things coming, then MOVE. Instead of whining anonymously, do something about it. People are losing their jobs for standing up for what they believe, and all you folks can do is sit around and complain about stuff that has not even happened. Ridiculous.
