The Democrat from Illinois received 62.5 million votes (52 percent) to 55.5 million for Republican John McCain. Obama gained 349 Electoral College votes, while McCain garnered 147. A candidate must receive 270 electoral votes to claim the presidency.
While Obama was elected the nation’s next president, McCain was heavily favored in Georgia and in Madison County.
Locally, McCain received 8,224 votes (72.5 percent), while 2,957 (26 percent) voted for Obama. Another 128 in Madison County cast a ballot for Libertarian Bobb Barr.
In Georgia, McCain received 52.9 percent of the vote, compared to 46.4 percent for Obama.
The President-Elect addressed thousands of people in Grant Park in Chicago late Tuesday night.
“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer,” said Obama.
He added that he will work to earn the support of those who did not vote for him.
“To those Americans whose support I have yet to earn,” he said, “I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your president, too.”
What an historic day. The Dream isn't just alive...the Dream is REAL!
My grandaughter in California called and was so happy. She works for the registerd nurses union out there and of course they endorsed Obama.
My son a registered respiratory therapist and a journalist for one of the newspapers called and was having a party at his house to celebrate.
My daughter voted for the first time in her life.
I hate his grandma died so close to the finish.
We have a new chance to save this country and I believe with Obama at the helm we can do just that.
With Missouri and it's 11 electoral votes still too close to call, Obama has 365(!) electoral votes to 162 for McCain. Obama has MORE THAN DOUBLE the votes than McCain...a lot more!
Popular Vote: Obama has 65,340,608 to McCain's dismal 57,358,053 a difference of SEVEN PERCENT(!) and almost EIGHT MILLION votes (WOW!)
That's a crushing majority unseen in the United States in over 24 years. That's a mandate for change. That's a summary rejection of Republican philosophy. And yes, that is indeed a "huge, huge margin!"
Ironic that the racist lady from Alaska turned out to be one of the biggest helpers in electing the first African American President.
Looks like this election is going to be pretty expensive for Caribou Barbie as well. Lawyers for the Republican National Committee are going to Alaska to seek reimbursement for the Palin spending spree on clothing for her and her family. Now that's justice! One of them described Palin's spree as "“Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast."
Alaskan Hillbillies for Obama! Thanks again, Sarah!
Already everyone seems to be in a more positive mood as our country will soon be moving forward again after the 8 year Republican fiasco that has left us in a recession / depression. Everywhere I go, even though the Republicans have driven the economy into the ground, people are genuinely excited and proud to be Americans again!
He also made alot of promises.Complaining about it now calling Obama's VP a total dork and saying he looks gay won't do no good.
I also don't think the world won't be hear for another election.
YES WE CAN!!!!
And we as a world right now are in the book of Revelations? As much as you don't want to admit it we are in the last days so you had better get ready for the Lords return.

Bottom line, America has spoken, Barack Obama is our
President-Elect, and we need to pray for him just as we prayed for
Bush during these last 8 years of economic turmoil and
wars (by the way, wars are mentioned in the Bible, but
who was in office when they started?)
sporting events and have noticed several people that do
not put their hands over their hearts during the NATIONAL
ANTHEM, but are still looking in the direction of the FLAG.
Also, when someone is actually singing the National Anthem
does the singer have their hand over their heart? Often
times not. But...it is customary and expected for a person
to place their hand over their heart during the PLEDGE OF
ALLEGIANCE, and if we all do our homework instead of
trying to condemn the man and review the clips of what
exactly was happening when his hand was not over his heart,
we wouldn't be so quick to judge.
opinions, as we all do. Just curious...which news program did you see
that particular incident on? I would like to "do my
homework" on it.
