Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss won an easy victory in Georgia’s U.S. Senate runoff Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Jim Martin.
Chambliss was the overwhelming favorite in Madison County, receiving 4,832 votes to 1,658 for Martin (74.5 to 25.5 percent).
The Georgia race received national attention as Senate Democrats hoped to win enough seats to halt Republican filibusters.
Madison County voters also favored Republican Lauren McDonald by 72 percent in a runoff against Democrat Jim Powell for a public service commission seat. McDonald also won the election statewide. Mike Sheffield received 55 percent of the votes in Madison County versus Sara Doyle for a judge’s post on the Court of Appeals, but Doyle won the statewide race.
