Dear Editor:

This is an open letter to the “more recent” residents of Madison County.

Madison County is still primarily an agriculturally oriented society made up of conservative, God-fearing people loyal to the state of Georgia. We want not only our tax base to be minimal but local government interference to also be minimal. I feel any attempt to push radical liberal constraints on Madison County citizens needs strong rebuttal. For example, the recent introduction of the county BOC of an ordinance outlawing the discharge of a firearm within 300 feet of a residence.

Our state of Georgia already lists the discharge of firearms within 50 yards of a public road or firing across a public road to be unlawful. That’s enough for my money. For many of us old hunters who served in the military during past wars, being familiar with guns was a blessing. Believe me, you don’t sit down on the battlefield and chat with the enemy. If you do, you’re dead. Please respect the right of those of us to bear arms; that is what the second amendment is all about. You may need us again one day.

We have had three subdivisions move in around us in the last 30 years. Most are inhabited by good folks, but there are a few city slickers wanting our fresh country air, low tax base, and city conveniences that they left in the city.

From some of the latter folks we have encountered their lead batteries placed in our woods, litter, piles of uncovered poop and drowned groves of trees from their community well backwash directed on our land. And then there is the golfer(s) using my pastures as a driving range without my permission. I guess they have never been instructed what it is like to be neighborly.

It is certainly not the tons of firecrackers set off on a peaceful night or blaring speakers around their swimming pools – and they worry about gunfire? My piece of advice: be neighborly to us gun-toting folks owning a hunk of peaceful land.

If so many rednecks would have a gun control class this would not be a problem. Us (city slickers) as you call us want the same thing you want we are just tired of some redneck who lives next door shooting from his back porch when I live 100 yards from his house. Most of these guys in this town dont even know how to properly carry a gun, hunt or do anything but spot light and break the laws you have here. Without us city slickers living here your town would be so broke you wouldn't need to worry about gun laws because you wouldn't have a job. So back off walk your fat butt 300 yards and shoot.

You have summarized many of the sentiments of most of us here in Madison County. It is high time we let the commissioners know that we aren't going to tolerate their ridiculous meddling with foolish, unenforceable, wasteful "lifestyle" ordinances and additional taxes while our county is going broke and everyone and his brother is stealing from right under the commissioners noses. Perhaps our commissioners should spend a little more time balancing the budget and cutting expenses and a lot less time piling on dumb ordinances promoted by a very vocal 2% of the population, a population who probably won't be here much longer because they borrowed too much against their overvalued cookie-cutter subdivision houses and they're in foreclosure.

The oxford English dictionary definds liberalism as
favorable to constitutional changes and legal or admini-
strative reforms tending in the direction of freedom
or democracy.To be free in speech or action is also
relevant in this context. That is why the liberals support
the ACLU because they are very adamant about protecting
the Bill of Rights which gurantee your right to bear
arms. Conservative goverments such as the Nazis and facists
regimes of Italy and Germany are the likely culprits
to seize your weapons. Your verbage would have been better
to say, "those radical neo conservatives"

EITHER WAY, YOU CAUGHT HIS MEANING. This is not a spelling B. Have you checked out the texting yet? The kids now make up words instead of learning how to spell them. SBOALTTM. Ask your kids if you don't know what I'm saying.

That's spelling "bee." Here's a new one for you... "ignoramus." If you don't knwo what it means, you might be one.

Your argument is that because kids do something, it is the right way to do a thing?

If you weren't so obtuse, you might have looked further into my comment and noted that, if it were an intentional misspelling, that would be humorous in a very punny way.

Not everyone is as mean-spirited as you and your family.

It would be better if everyone did respect one another and did have the knowledge of proper care and use of firearms...in a perfect world that would be the case, but in this world it's not a reality at all. I have guns, I have lived in Madison County for over 43 years, but I still think that we will have to pass a law to get these people who THINK they know how to handle a gun and THINK that it's okay to discharge the weapon so close to someone else's property to stop. In a perfect world, which unfortunately seems to be where so many people think we live, a law wouldn't be needed.

If you've been here for 22 years, you know you chose to live in a rural county where people farm and hunt for a living. If you didn't like it, you should have chosen a different place to live!
